What is leadership? A former Human Resources Director at the Calgary Police Service (CPS) recently shared her firsthand experience of workplace challenges. Angela Whitney revealed that during her tenure leading the HR department, she encountered instances of harassment, bullying, and discrimination. In a report by Global News, she recounted situations where men deliberately blocked her during meetings and displayed disrespectful behavior when addressing HR issues. Whitney noted that delivering messages related to discipline, expectations, and grievances often led to confrontations where male counterparts would intentionally stand over her. These incidents shed light on the need for greater awareness and action to foster a culture of respect and inclusivity within organizations. #thursdaythoughts is reflecting on the beautiful day I spent in Wilmington, DE yesterday with the Blackwell HR Solutions team updating their mission and values. This team, their client base, and their impact is growing daily. Their leader Michelle Ray, SHRM-SCP, SPHR took an intentional pause to have the team update the values created when she founded the company five years ago. A lot has changed in the last five years…in the world, in business, and in this team…and it was refreshing to reflect on it and what it means to the work that this team does for their clients every day. I was moved yesterday not just by the work of this team, but also the location of their offsite. The DuPont Country Club was founded in 1920, but its roots can be traced back to the 1880s. It was organized and maintained for the promotion of the physical welfare and social health of the DuPont employees. In the late 1990s, it transitioned away from being an employee only facility and since 2018 has been under new ownership. I love to walk into a building and think “if these walls could talk.” And yesterday I thought if these walls could see and listen to this female owned and operated HR consultancy and advisory wouldn’t they be surprised at how much has changed with how we view the physical welfare and health of our employees. Part of me is inspired that over 100 years ago, corporate America knew this was important enough to build a structure to foster it. Today, I had the privilege of attending a People Engagement Session. It was a thought-provoking day, highlighting the importance of recognizing that adolescents in the workplace are still children and require tailored support, expectations, and safeguarding. Generational differences shape how individuals engage and who they feel comfortable speaking to about issues like bullying, harassment, and victimization. Understanding these nuances, especially for Generation A, begins now. I am immensely grateful to Ryan Hoy Assoc CIPD and Laura Heathfield for the opportunity to sit on a panel during today’s session, answering questions about creating a great, safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace. Reflecting on my journey with McDonald’s, which started 8 years ago, I never imagined I’d be addressing over 100 business leaders and members of the executive team. Sharing insights on fostering an inclusive environment has been an incredible experience, especially as someone who has grown, supported, and developed within this workplace, all the way to managing the HR and People Department in our franchise. Eight years ago, as a crew member on a Crew Council board, a comment from a fellow member has stayed with me and continues to guide how we engage with our staff: “Why would I, a 16-year-old female, speak to you as a middle-aged man about my problems?” This reminder underscores the importance of ensuring that every team member feels heard, safe, included, and respected.
