Consider this: Hong Kong, China awards a staggering $768,000 for a gold medal, while the US offers $38,000. Despite the US having a much higher medal count, the payouts seem inversely proportional. My guess: China. Because US is going through a transitional phase where its major gold medalists have retired and the new ones are not quite there yet. But who are the real winners? I think it is the sports, the athletes - those that made it, win or lose. There is Leon Marchand - the French Golden Boy of the Pool, there is the Japanese Men's A Gymnastic Team, the Russians in Trampoline, the unstoppable Chinese in diving ... in every sport, in every discipline there is drama, there is pain, there is joy and there is heartache. To have a winner, means there are many losers. I think it matters little which country won, as long as we understand and appreciate the individual journeys each athlete made to get to Paris. Unlike some professional sports where money can get you in - e,g, F1's Lance Stroll (whose father owned the sports car company Aston Martin. Not saying he is a bad driver (like N Mazepin), but just saying that he might not be selected if he was not the son of the boss). To be an Olympian, you must make the grade. (And your country can afford to send you). To win a medal, you have to beat everyone but the top 2 in the current field based on form and quality and luck (refereeing is always an issue in some sports). Take into consideration how much blood, sweat, tears each one had to put in - which country wins the most ... is for really a conversation for non-athletes.

As the MD of the then Arriva-owned sightseeing business, The Original Tour, during the 2012 London Olympics, I witnessed firsthand the significant business impact of the games. Hosting the Olympics requires businesses within the city to plan for a four-year cycle: the year before, the year of, and the two years after the games. The pre-games year brings a welcome boost in tourism, but during the year of the games many businesses suffered significantly from the drop in visitor turnover. However, the good news is that the post-London games period saw an extraordinary spike in tourism over the following few years, thanks to positive publicity and pent-up demand. Despite the challenges during the games, when viewed over four years, the event proved to be a considerable boost for business (the £20B bill to UK taxpayers is another conversation). The takeaway for operators in a host city? While it’s wise for visitor-dependent businesses to tighten their belts during the year of the games, don’t skimp on investment programs. The resolution for the observance of the Olympic Truce for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 was formally adopted by the UN in November last year, calling for the Olympic Truce to be respected from seven days before the start of the Olympic Games until seven days after the Paralympic Games. “I solemnly appeal to all Member States to demonstrate their commitment to the Olympic Truce for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games and to undertake concrete actions at the local, national, regional and world levels to promote and strengthen a culture of peace and harmony based on the spirit of the Truce,” said UNGA President Francis. “I also call upon all warring parties of current armed conflicts around the world to boldly agree to true mutual ceasefires for the duration of the Olympic Truce, thus providing an opportunity to settle disputes peacefully.” The idea that the Olympic Games are a call for peace is rooted in the ancient Olympic tradition, which originated in ancient Greece. 🥇 Olympic Medals per Capita: a totally new perspective. The Paris Olympics have come to a close, and once again, the US and China topped the medal table. But what if we shift our focus to a more equitable measure—gold medals per capita? In this scenario, Grenada 🇬🇩 takes the crown, proudly securing two bronze medals for its population of approximately 117,220. Dominica 🇩🇲 (66,170) and St.Lucia 🇱🇨 (179,790) would complete the podium. 🇳🇿 New Zealand's 10 golds puts them in fourth place on that table and a remarkable 11th overall. Olympic games are over. The final tally speaks 3 important things (that I caught): 1. Australia has really dominated in the number of medals considering their low population. Very high number for a not-so-populous country 2. China has led the #1 position for the longest duration of the competition and ended up sharing the first place with USA as they both had equal number of gold medals. 3. The USA technically did win the olympics since they have the most medals (quite a bit more than even China), and their results are still strong, but my prediction is that as time goes on, China will become stronger and stronger competitor and China will likely continue to develop their sports and win. In a nutshell - the message is: -- Success isn't owned, it is merely rented, and rent is due every single day. -- Never stop working, never stop improving.
