#Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of June 19, 1865 – when the news of freedom arrived in Texas and reached the last remaining enslaved individuals.    Today is a day of celebration, marking the end of chattel slavery in the United States and the freedom of future generations. Today is also a reminder that there is so much more to be done in the name of justice and equality.    At MN8 Energy, we know that diverse perspectives drive innovation and propel us towards a brighter, more sustainable future. June 19 commemorates Juneteenth, the day in 1865 on which enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received the promise offered by the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after its issuance.   President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation — “sincerely believed to be an act of justice” — offered not just freedom but hope for equality. Nearly 160 years later, we continue to work toward the promise of this monumental document, with much left to do.   At Greater St. Louis, Inc., we know that success for each of us is success for all of us. Achieving our North Star — inclusive economic growth — means that we must take into account the often painful history of both our region and our country and attempt to bridge the opportunity gaps left behind. As Bet Tzedek advances “justice for all” Angelenos, we acknowledge Los Angeles’ dark history of redlining, segregation, and racially motivated zoning laws. We applaud the Black-owned newspapers and Black publishers who shed light on these systemically racist acts and spread awareness of the early legal victories to combat this scourge. The entrenched impact of redlining is one of the reasons Bet Tzedek is partnering with the County of L.A. to roll out a major new program promoting estate planning in communities of color. Our “Leaving a Legacy” program will help ensure that low-income Angelenos are able to pass down their homes or other assets to their kids and grandkids so that these families can build intergenerational wealth. Thigpen, K. (2023). Restoring Justice on Their Terms: The Path to Healing for Tulsa and Birmingham (Doctoral dissertation, The University of Alabama at Birmingham). ABSTRACT: This thesis is a comparative case study examining the impact of the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921 and the Birmingham Sixteenth Street Church Bombing in 1963. The comparative case study method aims to study how both communities educated the public about racial violence through the nonprofit sector. This research explores the racial structures that were in place during the time. This thesis argues for the role of the government in providing diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion training for federal employees. This research also discusses the government's contribution to advancing social equity. Happy Juneteenth! Today, we join millions across the nation in commemorating Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. This day, also known as #FreedomDay or #EmancipationDay, is a celebration and reminder of resilience, liberation, and the enduring fight for justice and equality. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of all enslaved people, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. WHY JUNETEENTH MATTERS Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone; it is a call to action. It underscores the importance of acknowledging the past, understanding the systemic injustices that persist, and committing to the ongoing struggle for racial equity. What an incredible experience walking alongside the Warriors float during the Juneteenth parade on June 8th, 2024! Juneteenth, a blend of "June" and "nineteenth," marks a pivotal moment in our history. It's commonly believed to be the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas became free, however around that time it's when they came to learn of their freedom. While Juneteenth is when the emancipation was enforced, the reality is that African Americans were legally freed about two and a half years earlier, on January 1, 1863, with the Emancipation Proclamation. This underscores a crucial point: knowledge is power. Understanding historical truths and current regulations empowers us to navigate and transform our world. This belief drives my commitment to supporting small businesses through advocacy, mentorship, and stewardship. I firmly hold to the principle of "each one, teach one," and it was heartwarming to see so many beautiful faces at the parade yesterday. Thank you, Warriors, for the invite! Let's continue driving change and supporting small businesses in the Bay Area through educational programs, mentorship, access to funding, increased visibility, and creating contract opportunities.
