#motivationmonday Last Friday, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) announced the 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count results. LA County's homeless population dipped slightly to 75,312 in 2024 (down 0.27%), while the City of LA saw a bigger decrease to 45,252 (down 2.2%). While officials were cautiously optimistic about the results, they noted that one year of numbers moving in the right direction is insufficient to say the LA region has turned a corner in addressing homelessness. #newtrend #CasaMilagrosa #DepaulUSALA #Charity1633 #homelessnesshasnoplace

On the front-page 🗞️ Diversion is one tool in our homeless response toolkit. Diversion specialists work closely with newly unhoused neighbors to immediately access safe alternative housing options. The Dallas Morning News wrote, "Sarah Kahn, President and CEO of Housing Forward, said the 12% drop in homelessness year-over-year can partly be attributed to proven diversion programs. These initiatives keep people off the streets by helping them find alternative housing quickly, Kahn said. Between April 2023 and May 2024, 3,173 individuals and 1,781 households were successfully diverted from homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties, according to Housing Forward data. More than 60% of successful diversions were households with children." Read all about it - https://lnkd.in/g8PMFmTF #endhomelessness #Diversion #HousingForward

The concerns of increasing homelessness raised by Phillipa Howden-Chapman (previous Kāinga Ora Board member and a Professor of Public Health) and shared in this story by NZ Herald 👇🏼 add to the growing list of drivers exacerbating homelessness in Aotearoa: the cost-of-living crisis, funding cuts, moving people and families out of emergency housing, increasing rates of housing instability, and the dire lack of housing supply that will take years to turn around. Outreach teams are seeing alarming trends of homelessness on the rise and with the many drivers exacerbating homelessness, we can’t afford to look away. Tomorrow is World Homeless Day - a powerful reminder that now is the time for all NZers to take a stand, have fire in our bellies, and push for real change. It could be your father, mother, son, daughter, cousin, or friend facing housing instability or homelessness. Let’s come together to be a driving force to end homelessness. #EndHomelessness #HousingIsAHumanRight #WorldHomelessDay #HousingForAll

Today RTFH released the topline data collected from more than 1,700 volunteers spread across San Diego County in January for this year’s Point-in-Time Count. The information shows the minimum number of people experiencing homelessness across the region. Overall, the 2024 Point-in-Time Count found no less than 10,605 people experiencing homelessness across our region. This includes 6,110 unsheltered San Diegans and 4,495 individuals in shelters and transitional housing. This is a 3% increase from the 2023 Point-in-Time Count. In 2023, homelessness across the region was up about 20 percent from the prior year. The 2024 count shows homelessness is a regional issue, with roughly 200 additional people experiencing homelessness in each region of San Diego County. 1 in 4 people seeking help are fleeing domestic violence. Homelessness services are overwhelmed by people seeking help. In 2023, 108,000 people were unable to be assisted because of shortages of staff, accommodation or other services. At Link Wentworth, we know that a Housing First approach can provide immediate, stable, long-term accommodation. Today marks the beginning of Homelessness Week, a critical time for us at the St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria to raise our voices and shine a light on the pressing issue of homelessness here at home. Just a few days ago, we gathered at Parliament House to amplify our advocacy efforts and demand change. Our dedicated team at VincentCare Victoria joined forces with the Victorian Homelessness Network (VHN) and called for urgent action to increase social housing. With 60,000+ households on the social housing waitlist and numbers rising, VHN is pressing State and Federal Governments to commit to building at least 60,000 additional social homes. As a powerful symbol of this campaign, 60,000 origami houses were folded, and 6,000 of them were displayed at Parliament of Victoria to represent just 10% of the homes urgently needed. This campaign urges a commitment to construct the required social homes and implement a 10-year national plan to end homelessness. How can you help? During Homelessness Week (August 5 to 11), our report, '"Nowhere else to go", Young people's views of homelessness', was referenced in media coverage about Mission Australia's study on disadvantage experienced by young people facing homelessness. In 2023, children and young people aged 8 to 17 arrived alone at 'Specialist Homelessness Services' more than 1700 times. These services exist to help Tasmanians experiencing homelessness or in need of housing. On an average day in Tasmania, at least 2 children or young people make a request for help from homelessness services but can’t be assisted. This week, peak bodies and homelessness services around Tasmania have stressed the urgent need for stronger policy and program responses for children and young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
