The #battlefield risks faced in modern combat missions vary significantly depending on the theater of operations. One area of developing risk is the use of toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) on the battlefield. In most cases TICs are used for many day-to-day activities. These range from fertilizers in agriculture to batteries powering a child’s toy car. The challenge occurs when enemy forces have access to large amounts of the #chemicals used to manufacture these commercial solutions and weaponize them for use for nefarious purposes. This is a challenge for #military commanders, especially if they are not able to rapidly identify what chemicals their troops are facing and then make the appropriate battlefield decisions. In his latest article in Defense Opinion, Dr. Jeffrey Brodeur, a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (#CBRN) consultant at Rigaku Analytical Devices shares his insights into the strategic advantage that military commanders have in being able to presumptively identify TICs on the battlefield. Seems to me, all they would have had to do, was to put the U.S. Coast Guard in the mix, considering their expertise in tracing oil. The response from the Pentagon sounds absurd on the face of it, where they claim it is not the DoD's responsibility to insure the integrity of the Supply Chain back to the source.
