Happy #WorldMangroveDay! Today, we're turning the spotlight on the crucial mission of mangrove conservation, which is also one of the topics featured in DERTOUR Foundation’s 10-year anniversary campaign. Make sure to keep an eye out for our in-depth article on mangrove conservation in collaboration with the Wildlife and Ocean Resource Conservation (WORC), an organization that has been at the forefront of ecosystem conservation in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. Mangroves play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems, offering protection against erosion, filtering pollutants, and serving as carbon sinks. WORC's innovative approach involves planting mangrove trees strategically to create natural barriers, fostering growth and mitigating the impact of motorized boats that often threaten these delicate ecosystems. With the help of #ecotourism, including boat tours and educational programs, WORC has planted 15,000 mangrove trees, offsetting 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ and creating sustainable livelihoods for the local community. As the ECOP Africa, we are firmly opposed to the practice of trophy hunting. We believe trophy hunting is detrimental to biodiversity conservation and has enabled an economy of corruption that continues to incentivize harmful practices. Instead, we advocate for the promotion and effective development of community-driven ecotourism economies. By supporting alternative livelihoods for local communities centered around sustainable ecotourism, we can protect Africa's precious wildlife and habitats while empowering residents as stewards of their natural resources. Ecotourism offers a path forward that is better aligned with the long-term wellbeing of both people and planet. We call for the total abolition of trophy hunting and a concerted effort to transition to ecotourism-based conservation and development models across the continent. Join us in our mission to safeguard Africa's biodiversity for generations to come. #ConservationMatters #EcotourismForGood #AfricaRising Early Career Ocean Professionals

First Nations people have managed Australia's lands for over 65,000 years. If we continue to deny Indigenous knowledge and ways of caring of Country, we will do so at our peril. It is great to see the Malgana people of Gathaagudu/Shark Bay together with the Western Australian government to co-manage the proposed Malgana Conservation Estate—a rightful step to land preservation and creating potential cultural tourism experiences. Returning land ownership is fundamental to reconciliation, recognition, and respect for Indigenous people who are the traditional custodians of our amazing home we call Australia. We need more of these collaborations, especially in areas where sustainable tourism methods can act as conservation rather than extraction methods. Oceans cover 70% of the world's surface. However, less than 3% of it lies within a highly protected zone. Our oceans are our planet's life support system and we need to protect them. 🌊 🌍 This project stands out for us because it is a common issue we face in ocean conservation. The well-being of the local population in Madagascar hinges on the health of the sea; by preserving it, we not only support the livelihoods of community members but also protect their invaluable ecosystems. In Madagascar, oceans have long been a vital source of food for the coastal populations, and is well known for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs and marine life. Over time it has become the site of a budding ecotourism sector. The under-regulated use of ocean resources and unsustainable fishing practices has damaged parts of the reefs and marine ecosystem. Alongside this, WWF Madagascar 🌍🇲🇬 have been a powerful force in putting solutions in place, by collaborating with local fishermen and governmental bodies to manage the use of marine and coastal resources in Southern Toliara. This project has two main objectives, to establish sustainable use of resources and create socio-economic opportunity for the nearby communities. "We are in reach of a whole new relationship with the ocean, a wiser, more sustainable relationship. The choice lies with us." - David Attenborough

☝️ 'Project Report More than 130,000 trees have been planted on private land in #Alberta to restore an area that was at risk of being converted into agricultural land. This project aims to recreate the historical forest, providing vital habitat for wildlife like songbirds, raptors, moose, elk, and bears. As the forest grows, it will support nesting, foraging, and hunting activities crucial for local biodiversity. Restoring this forest brings benefits beyond #wildlife habitat—it improves water quality, enhances food security, and offers new opportunities for hiking and birdwatching. By planting trees near watercourses, we're safeguarding their long-term health for both residents and wildlife. The trees also stabilize soil, manage rainfall, and contribute to climate stability by sequestering carbon. Local ranchers will enjoy improved ecosystem services on their land, while the new forest boosts the economy through activities like hunting and ecotourism. This initiative also created jobs for eight seasonal tree planters, supporting our community and Canada's reforestation efforts. If you want to contribute to impactful projects like this, plant trees for impact today! 🌱 https://lnkd.in/eQCWY7TJ'

We've learned how conservation preserves Bend, Oregon's sense of place, and traditional communities in coastal Brazil hope to do the same. The residents' association in the Cassurubá Extractive Reserve is working to bring community tourism to the mangrove ecosystems to ensure the survival of both his community and the reserve, which depends on people remaining there and continuing their traditional livelihoods. Not only would tourism give families a reason to stay, but it would also attract much needed services and ensure that traditional communities can maintain control over their territory and preserve the environments they depend on. https://lnkd.in/dQHD-die
