World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2nd February. Observation of Wetlands Day is ideal for increasing people's understanding of these critically important ecosystems. Whales have been granted legal “personhood”. We LOVE this! In early April, a treaty was signed by Indigenous leaders of New Zealand, Tahiti and the Cook Islands to recognise whales as legal persons. According to The Conversation, the declaration was put in place to protect the rights of whales to migrate freely. It will also allow the use of mātauranga Māori (the traditional knowledge of the Māori people) in combination with science to help safeguard these marine mammals. Not only do whales have significant cultural meaning for groups like the Māori, they also play a vital role in balancing the delicate ecosystems of the ocean. What threats do whales face? While we have made big strides in whale conservation, there are still many challenges faced by these creatures which threaten their survival. These include: Whaling: The hunting of whales for food and oil. Climate change: The warming of oceans poses many threats to the survival of whale populations. Ships: Whales are often injured or killed when struck by ships. Plastic pollution: The accidental ingestion of plastics found in the ocean could be deadly for whales.
