I'll echo Nick's comments & add a few of my own. Every speaker was fascinating, and each added another facet to the topic. We also need to recognise the contribution of PEARL UCL. This utterly unique, exquisitely designed facility not only inspires but validates the concepts we presented: that social design needs to address the entire human, that is, a being who breathes, smells, moves, craves and fears. Think kinaesthesia, proprioception: our bodily sense of space. Many of our sensory responses, & actions, are determined by modalities which operate outside the world of screens / sounds, and they're not captured by virtual models. And many of our differences - vital elements of social interaction - derive from these senses. Let's hope that PEARL becomes a worldwide model for architectural and civil planning. Every continent should have at least one.

Learning Theater Design Through Play Students explored the magic of set, sound, and lighting design by tapping into their own personal experiences to create powerful and evocative work. As Sara Brown, professional set designer and professor at MIT, says: “If you feel it personally, an audience will also feel it personally.” #TheaterDesign #CreativeLearning #MITTheater #SetDesign #LightingDesign #SoundDesign #PowerOfPlay #StudentCreativity https://lnkd.in/efJz_zn4

What will the performance spaces of the future look like? Theatre design has always responded to the times, and as audience expectations and technology evolve, do we need a different approach to our buildings to cater for a different kind of experience? https://lnkd.in/g-8Vp_Sw #ITEAC #Theatre #TheatreDesign #Architecture #TheatreArchitecture

Hi All, Just thought I'd share with you a little snippet of some of the fantastic projects I've been involved in over the years. I've been involved in so many other absolutely amazing projects that I am super proud of being part of, but there is something that made these projects stand out to me, where I felt an immense sense of satisfaction and achievement once completed. 😊 #Carpentry#Joinery#Sceniccarpentry#Propmaking#Setbuilding#Craftsmanship#TV#Arttrails#Theatre#Events#Exhibitions#Museums#Popups#Windowdisplays#Commercial#Fitouts#Creative#Immersive#Fun

Hot off the press! The latest artnet Intelligence Report takes an peek behind the numbers of today’s art market, the artist power ranking, the most bankable artists in each category, and the regional differences in the globalized art market.
https://lnkd.in/gGESrS5t The latest bi-annual report takes an investigative peek behind the curtain of today’s art market. More than ever, marquee evening sales have transformed into the art-world equivalent of Broadway shows, with costumes, spotlights, and a big dose of razzle-dazzle. Less well understood are the ways in which the proceedings—and even final results—can be carefully stage-managed, especially following the repeal of a set of laws governing auction houses in New York City. At the center of this edition, Artnet News senior reporter Katya Kazakina delves into the legal changes, and what they mean for buyers and sellers.

Are less elaborate shows and fewer productions/exhibitions the new normal? • "Summer theater: Trying to make more out of less”: It’s been five years since audiences for summer theater have had as much available to them as they do this season, but an overview of the schedules for six companies in the Capital Region and Berkshires shows an overall trend toward fewer productions and smaller casts. https://lnkd.in/eTuFXm_h • “Live Performance Theatre Industry Analysis, Trends and Forecast”: Shows with elaborate productions have been shown to be less and less profitable for producers. Consumer preferences have favored shows with simple sets and powerful stories instead of over-the-top, costly shows, leaving many expensive productions unable to recoup. https://lnkd.in/eUVPqz9R • “Welcome to the slow museum, where less is more”: While the Covid-19 pandemic sparked a culture-wide reckoning with the frantic pace of contemporary life, some museums began to pull their foot off the gas even before the world went into lockdown. https://lnkd.in/enqgV3SV #SweibelArts #Trendwatching #LessIsMore

What a summer! And here in LA, things are still heating up as we move into the Fall: In late September, I'll resume work on CONVENTION at LA Public's fifth (wow!) "Open House" at STILE Downtown Los Angeles, featuring visual artist Kaia King-Hall and new writing from the MADLab Playwright's cohort / Moving Arts Theatre in Atwater! With CONVENTION, we will jump ahead slightly to workshop the "Wallace Supporters" scene, the counterpoint to last month's "Conspirator's Scene." On the Swseng front, Erik and I are continuing to add awesome features including: - The ability to annotate: this will be monumentally helpful for our actors and director in rehearsal; - "In concert" brackets, which more accurately show who is talking to whom in a measure; and - Entrances and exits within a measure! I used to do a lot of this manually. Now in Swseng, it will be automated, which saves HOURS of formatting time, and makes reading and rehearsing easier for the entire acting company. I also have a few other special announcements ... more to come :) Till then, let's keep Swseng-ing!

Head of Film Media Theatre and Performance @ Northumbria University | Researcher & Higher Education Specialist
Do you have something to say about contemporary theatre and performance, either as a practitioner, a researcher, or as a professional from a different area for whom theatre/performance has been important in some way? The 'Backpages' team of the Contemporary Theatre Review journal are actively soliciting short articles for publication this year. Backpages (https://lnkd.in/dgM4AKrM) is a forum for immediate responses to current events from scholars and practitioners. * each issue usually publishes 5-6 pieces (max.) and we’re looking for submissions by August 15 in the first instance (but we have space later in the year too) * each piece needs to be about 1500 to 2500 words or so. * articles can be in many formats or foci: profiles, dramaturgy journals, musings, interviews, initial analytical texts/experiments etc., reflections from different disciplines on performances you encountered... * key topic areas of interest are: climate crisis, new writing and theatre-making, dance theatre, disability arts, global majority perspectives, Indigenous work, VR and AR work, scenography, queer arts, migrant theatre, sound design, puppetry, new forms, arts policy and funding, theatre for children and youth, and resurrecting forgotten voices in the field. BUT we are open to any area of debate in contemporary theatre and performance Interested? Drop me a line, very happy to have an informal chat before a potential submission. #performance #theatre #culture #research
