What will the performance spaces of the future look like? Theatre design has always responded to the times, and as audience expectations and technology evolve, do we need a different approach to our buildings to cater for a different kind of experience? https://lnkd.in/g-8Vp_Sw #ITEAC #Theatre #TheatreDesign #Architecture #TheatreArchitecture

What’s next for the Theatre Green Book? The one-of-a-kind guide continues to lead the way for the cultural sector’s route to net zero, and Buro Happold continues to work closely with the group to produce an updated edition planned for this summer. Setting out common standards for sustainable theatre across all areas of practice and operation, the 2021 award winning ‘Theatre Green Book,’ which Buro Happold co-authored and provided sustainability expertise across, is teaming up with three national theatres to help drive towards net zero across the industry. The Theatre Green Book’s ambition is to achieve baseline standards across buildings, operations and productions by the end of 2026. To help push this forward, several of the UK’s leading theatre organisations have come together to form a steering group to give the project more stability and resources - drawing on expertise from around the sector is what makes the guide a success. As part of the steering group, Buro Happold worked with National Theatres, with membership organisations including the Association of British Theatre Technicians, the Society of London Theatre/UK Theatre, authors Paddy Dillon and Lisa Burger, and the Theatres Trust. A second edition of the Theatre Green Book, created by the steering group, will be available from summer 2024. This edition will contain a ‘production calculator’ that can provide a basic carbon calculation for the principal elements of any show, along with a building survey tool, designed to help theatres create basic sustainability plans for buildings and support carbon calculation for building energy. The new edition will continue to draw on best practice from the former. With the original guide having already been translated into 10 languages, its influence is only growing – in the UK, and beyond. Preliminary Theatre Design Unproduced Concept One of the things we’re most proud of is that we’ve gotten to construct 7 theaters around the world to house our shows. This video rendering is a fun glimpse into what an early vision for one of our theatres might look like. While the space is completely bespoke and it already takes into consideration the site, the construction process, and the technical requirements of the show, it is also a completely blank canvas. At this point more than a theatre designed for the show, it is a space envisioned to house a creation. The big-picture ideas for how artists and audiences will interact within the space have been planned and designed, just as the overall concept is beginning to take shape. Video renderings like this inspire our teams and tease the imaginations of our clients and partners by capturing a space rooted in reality that begins to unlock the possibilities for how designers, artists, producers, and technicians can come together to collaborate and create. Helping Extraordinary People Become Extraordinary Speakers | Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication Coach
In 2014, I directed Arthur Miller's ALL MY SONS at the University of South Alabama. As is the case with everything I direct, I started first with a metaphor to hold the story together. That metaphor was a pride of lions. I won't go into detail about how I arrived at this visual, but to date it is one of the most exciting and successful containers I've ever used to bind the different elements of theatrical storytelling together. It provided a consistent vocabulary for communicating intentionally with designers, actors, and technicians. It was not for the audience to know. There were no lions on stage, or used as marketing visuals, or announced before the beginning of the show. No one came up to me afterward and said, "Cool lion theme." It was for me and the production team. And it is one of the most important things you can do as a successful public speaker and presenter. Choose a theme, a metaphor, or a question which influences and informs your story, content, and action ask. It will motivate your decisions, guide you when you're stuck, and ensure your audience experiences a cohesive message. Too often public speakers leave to chance valuable moments which are well within your control. The great ones, however, pick a container to guide the work. Happy Monday :) #effectivecommunication #publicspeaking #communication #communicationstrategy #metaphor #question #speakintoaction #theatre #directing #allmysons #universityofsouthalabama

Doctor Turned Storyteller | Storytelling for Impact | Bridging Art & Knowledge to Solve Challenges Creatively, Sustainably, Empathetically
It Takes an Army to Create Art: I’m part of the Theatre Gargantua TD Emerging Theatre Artist Roundtable this year. My intention to join was simple: make new artist friends. Around 10 emerging artists were selected to be part of sessions where we get mentorship, share resources and have profound discussions on how to create art sustainably and collaboratively. So much about storytelling through art—notably film and theatre—usually requires an army to make. Finding this army is I think the hardest part of professional art making. I’ve had experiences where I find the right people but the external circumstances do not allow for a collaboration. Or I find people and discover a little too late that while we were speaking the same language, we were speaking in entirely different dialects. I had a mentor joke that finding creative partnerships is harder than finding a romantic partner. In other fields the collaborative project is a bit more objective and standardized. Metrics and scopes are set. The process is concrete. When it comes to creating art together, especially art that changes the world, it’s a little less so. The process of creation needs to foster trust and vulnerability to co-create bravely. #emergingartist #creativeprocess #storytelling #theatre

Learning Theater Design Through Play Students explored the magic of set, sound, and lighting design by tapping into their own personal experiences to create powerful and evocative work. "making #theatre #accessible is not just about reaching #audiences physically; it’s about removing barriers of geography, economics and age. " - Rufus Norris in The Stage Media Company Ltd "Perhaps the most valid concern – around which there still remains a lingering scepticism – is about the impact of digital theatre on live performance. Some understandably fear that digital theatre cannibalises theatre audiences, drawing them away from the physical experience of attending a play. With so many National Theatre productions available in digital formats, we can share first-hand that these fears are, thankfully, unfounded. In fact, our data and independent surveys show there are no negative effects of announcing a cinema release on in-person ticket sales. In fact, there is some evidence that NT Live can increase live theatre audience numbers, while providing welcome box office to arts centres nationwide that provide both. Additionally, there is increasing proof that an NT Live can benefit the sales of the show being broadcast, adding exposure for the production. Bringing to light and to life the stories of women who are forgotten, overlooked, misunderstood. Singing stories of change, to change the stories of lives. Founder and CEO at Hope Sings.
⏰ Two weeks from TODAY we go live with "Unsung" (in French, "Inconnue") my immersive play/visite théâtrale at the Château de la Napoule. ❓ What's left? Lots! 1. Timing it - to be sure it's the right length in BOTH languages - it takes longer to say the same thing in French. 2. Working the script with both sets of actors, French and American, making sure they understand the arc of the play and their characters. I've never worked with French actors before. 🆘 ANYONE! How are French and American actors different, in how they work? 3. Blocking it - the show is site-specific, so have to figure out where in each room they deliver they vignettes. I know what I did before - but I'll have to modify it. 4 Selling it! Making sure people know about it. Promo is a different beast here than in the US. 🙏 ANY ADVICE ON PROMO IN FRANCE WELCOME! More details about the show, the process, the translation into French - in my latest newsletter . (Countdown to Unsung 2 of 3) https://lnkd.in/dK-qivwe
