We are delighted to present our forthcoming scenographic work. This exhibit aims not only to display historical remnants but also to engage visitors in a thoughtful dialogue surrounding the complex narratives of our shared past. Located within a space rich with controversy, our exhibition harnesses the inherent tensions and complexities surrounding the representation of colonial history. The chosen venue, known for its contentious nature, serves as a thought-provoking backdrop that challenges traditional norms of museum display and encourages critical reflection. Central to our exhibition's design is the use of the stripe principle, a concept that has sparked debate within the realm of historical restoration. Rather than shying away from this polemic topic, we have embraced it as the cornerstone of our architectural framework. The stripe principle, traditionally a subject of contention, has been ingeniously integrated into our layout, becoming the very essence that guides visitors through our collection. Have you ever wanted to do things differently? Working with our LAB partners at The Peale, we helped produce a small-scale exhibit that has room to grow and evolve. "Moses Williams: Cutter of Profiles" is an iterative presentation that actually invites visitors to comment on its design, text, and presentation. Sticky notes—with visitor comments—share the walls with small text panels. We think this approach allows museums to truly hear from their communities. WHAT MAKES THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY SO DAMN INTERESTING? The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago is a glorious vintage building but their exhibits are state of the art, rich media extravaganzas. I captured these video clips of their new exhibit - The Blue Paradox. It's a must-see. Berglund Construction had a part in the creation of the space that housed this exhibit. One of the coolest things about architecture is the fact that we can literally immerse ourselves within the creative outcome. As a visual artist, I really envy this aspect of the architectural profession. Really really do. My world is limited to "Hey Mom, look what I made." An architect can say "Let's go inside!" Not too long ago I was in Bentonville, Arkansas visiting the amazing Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Stunning architecture and a treasure trove of iconic American artwork - Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Asher B. Durand, Norman Rockwell, William Merritt Chase, Maxfield Parrish, Cincinnati's Robert S. Duncanson, Whistler - you name it, it's there. For a kid who loves both architecture and painting, it's a super combo. I was struck by this dome within the main area of the building, having absolutely no idea that one of my all-time favorite clients, Draper Inc., with whom I've worked for over 21 years, had designed and engineered its shading element - giant operable "sails," 14 feet wide at the bottom and 2 feet wide at the top - that is, until my dear friend Penny Sitler, LEED AP shared this the other day. Architects, give this a watch. There's also a shade structure application featured in the video for the museum's outdoor amphitheater with a really clever design and function. I could get in trouble for saying this, but Draper is one of those special manufacturers which not only is qualified for these types of unique challenges, their engineers might actually welcome them. By prompting reflection on the future implications of the content, exhibits can empower individuals to contribute positively to their communities and the world at large. Through thoughtful presentation and incorporation of takeaway messages, our collaborative approach ensures that exhibits not only inform and engage but also inspire action and change for a better tomorrow. Early on in the exhibit design process, we encourage our clients to consider the takeaway messages they want visitors to walk away with.
