While our Dr. Charles Fountain Interns are returning to school, we continue to be inspired by what they achieved this summer!!! This year’s interns had the special opportunity to reimagine Augustus F. Hawkins Park, a beloved green space in South Los Angeles. The program focused on designing a vision that will ensure this 8.5-acre historic park continues to serve the community for the next 25 years and beyond—not as a tourist destination, but as a preserved and enhanced oasis for local residents and natural wildlife. Originally transformed from a brownfield pipe yard in response to the community’s need for a safer space and a connection to nature, the park remains a vital social and environmental asset, deeply rooted in collaboration and community values. The original designer, Stephanie Landregan, MSPM, PLA, FASLA, LEED BD and C, shared her insights with the interns, recounting the early challenges of engaging and building trust in a community impacted by social and political unrest. Throughout their time on-site, the interns conducted research using ArcGIS Field Mapping and engaged directly with Parks Board members and local residents. Their design proposals focused on key elements like improving circulation, enhancing security, increasing parking, providing universal access, and updating the park’s plantings. They also explored new programming opportunities, such as events and activities for younger children, while incorporating CPTED principles like pedestrian lighting and better sight lines to ensure the park remains a safe and welcoming space for all.

The USGBC California Green Building Corps (GBC) represents a structured internship initiative that offers participants a valuable chance to gain practical experience, forge connections, and actively contribute to green building projects. The objective is to enhance the overall well-being, affordability, and sustainability of California for all its residents. Participants in this program extend their support to various projects, including the USGBC California Annual Environmental Justice Project, Green Schools microgrant initiatives, the California Native Plant Landscape Curriculum, as well as other chapter programs and member groups. Additionally, green building projects are identified from within architecture, engineering, and construction firms, sustainability consultancies, public agencies, and community partners. The goal is for these projects to yield public or community benefits, enabling those seeking opportunities to acquire hands-on experience, foster connections, and strengthen their positioning for future employment. https://lnkd.in/ghNdjxjU

Twin Cities connections – could you use an intern this fall to help with projects in transportation, urban studies, GIS and mapping, social services, or outdoor activities? A Macalester Environmental Studies major is looking for a 10-hr/week placement for the fall semester as a part of a senior capstone course, and I'd love to connect her with someone in my network. Coordination is minimal – an advisor needs to fill out a midterm/final evaluation and check in with the professor a few times. Speaking from experience as a student – this was my favorite part of getting a Mac ES degree. (Especially because you get to learn from Roopali Phadke!) It’s an amazing opportunity for students to plug into real world work, and they have a professor and classmates to debrief with every week to help grow their professional skills and understanding of broader “environmental” opportunities outside of Mac. This is how I learned about Transportation Demand Management and active transportation advocacy more broadly. It’s a real win-win for the student and the cause you care about! Deadline for registering the internship is 9/20. Reach out if you have any questions, I can connect you with the program.

When you get to work with your own daughter... Sure, I've seen my daughter Chase Carpenter in action. I've seen how her smile and positive energy can draw people in. I've watched her rally groups of young women, whether it's for pure fun and community development, or it's for a purpose-driven event, meant to move the needle. She's an organized, efficient, and magnetic leader. So you may imagine my pride getting to work alongside her this past summer at The Lola. The Lola is a vibrant, women's community space where I've been co-working for the past year and a half. I've also contributed some work to The LOLA team, helping Dana Xavier Dojnik with project management processes and content marketing; starting and co-leading a weekly accountability group with Melissa Uppelschoten, now led by superstar Qiana Avery, SHRM-CP; and co-facilitating the monthly, in-person Founders & Freelancers group with the incomparable energy-shifter Kafi London. In short, being part of The LOLA community has been my jam. When The LOLA accepted Chase as an intern last spring, I knew she'd fit right in. She understood the assignment: to help support the powerful network of inclusive, female entrepreneurs and women in business who want to build a life and career in which we are constantly growing, thriving and succeeding. It's exciting to see young women realize and embrace their own power. It makes me wish I knew what they already know when I was in my 20s! But it was a different time and we were ALL different people. :) I'm excited to keep my focus on what's ahead for all of us. Because women - young, mid-life and wise - will change the world. Established women in business and emerging female leaders: if you haven't felt it yet, lean in. And lean in HARD, because our time is NOW. #WomenInBusiness #FemaleLeadership #NextGenLeaders #MotherDaughterTeam #EmpowerWomen #WomenSupportingWomen #CommunityLeadership #FemaleEntrepreneurs #MentorshipMatters #TheLOLA #WomenWhoLead #CareerGrowth #InclusiveLeadership #YoungLeaders #WomenEmpowerment

On July 25th we hosted an event specifically designed to engage summer interns from local industry firms. LCI was excited for their own 2024 summer intern, Ryan Hydrick to participate and got his unique perspective. “This past Thursday, I attended the Lean Coffee and Intern Networking Event at Southland Industries in Dulles, VA. During the event, I worked with a team of three other interns to write instructions for building a tower with different shaped blocks based on a picture. Our task was to create instructions that anyone would be able to follow to build the tower. We deliberated within our groups and our instructions made sense to us. When the instructor took the picture away, we were still able to build our tower correctly. We then switched with another group, and had to rely on their instructions to build the tower. Because this group’s instructions were detailed and organized, our group was able to build the tower correctly, without the picture. However, the group that attempted to build the tower using my group’s instructions struggled. Our directions, while they made sense to us, lacked detail, and missed important information, mainly where certain shapes should be placed in relation to other shapes. The LCI Last Planner System® is a tool that helps establish a predictable workflow, and as writing the instructions for the block tower taught us, being able to illustrate how something should be assembled is crucial for the success of the construction team. Furthermore, the Last Planner System® is not simply a way to increase efficiency or output, but a method crucial for the successful implementation of any project. After the workshop, I talked to several construction and design interns about their educational and career goals, and how they view Lean principals influencing the industry for years to come. While my career goals may not align perfectly with the field of construction, attending this event was insightful, giving me a look into how Lean principals not only benefit the construction industry, but also how Lean principals can be implemented into any profession.” We thank Ryan for his participation in the event and openly sharing his experience! We also wish Ryan all the best as he returns his focus to pursuing his education at Hendrix College, in Conway, Arkansas.

Today, a new report from the Center for an Urban Future and The Bronx Community Foundation outlines actionable proposals from 50 influential Bronxites to enhance the borough's economic and social landscape. One notable idea, originating from our Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, is the creation of a year-long internship or work-study program for CUNY students in the Bronx. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between academia and practical experience while bolstering economic development and opportunities for Bronx residents. The report underscores the Bronx's pivotal role in New York City's economy, highlighting its substantial job growth and the imperative to address persistent challenges in affordability and access to essential services for its residents.
