Recently, we shared photos from our gathering with Signature Brands, LLC celebrating our quarter century of partnership. As with any long-term relationship, the past 25 years of successful collaboration didn’t just happen – it required deliberate adaptation and commitment over the years. One of the greatest honors we have as co-packers is the opportunity to serve as a partner and advisor for our customers. Our success comes from being intentional and proactive in these key 3 areas with all of our clients. 1. Thinking End-To-End on Cost It’s one thing to work together on reducing co-packing fees. True partners think bigger picture, or end-to-end, for total landed cost. For example, a few years ago, we collaborated on nesting the Signature cupcake package. This innovation resulted in reducing shipping costs by 14%, increasing shelf quantity from four packages to seven and reducing Signature’s retail slotting fees. When your competition is international, the joint team has to be relentless in pinching every penny. And it’s not one-and-done. Our cost-effective nesting approach has been used in several other Signature designs more recently to help them meet specific retailers’ needs. 2. Staying Agile For Spikes and Valleys When consumer demand spikes & when it contracts, Versatile and Signature have learned to work together to react seamlessly and opportunistically. That agile response starts with communication and trust built over a quarter of a century of non-stop communication and partnership that includes collaboration and forecasting raw materials. We maintain supplies for a forecast of several months and revise as needed. We look at actual requirements weekly, and run a 30-day supply. Maintaining materials in the raw form until the production need arises gives us the supply we need to stay agile and complete orders on time. 3. Embracing a Culture of Innovation and Entrepreneurship We understand that investing in relationships can sometimes mean investing in specialized equipment or a unique process. That is exactly what happened when Signature’s supplier costs were no longer in line and importing liners was a risky alternative. Signature asked Versatile to step up and become the manufacturer of cupcake liners, enabling Signature to gain an affordable, local and innovative provider. Design, price and packaging always will be demands of not only customers but also of retailers.
