🚆 Our new expert article is now available: "Next Generation Maintenance-Optimized Turnouts – Improved Quality and Reduced Operating Costs at the same time". While railway turnouts have low acquisition costs, maintenance work over their approximate 30-year lifespan constitutes a significant cost factor. Together with voestalpine Railway Systems, Kirchdorfer Concrete Solutions, ÖBB and renowned research partners such as the Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH and Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH, we have been working on a ground-breaking generation of turnouts as part of the EU project Shift2Rail. Our mission? To sustainably reduce the maintenance costs of turnouts. Following a comprehensive analysis of cost drivers, we have developed innovative solutions including targeted use of polyurethane elastomers, revolutionary sleeper designs, and elastically optimized fastening systems. Our prototype turnout, installed in the ÖBB network, has already demonstrated significant improvements in its first year, as evidenced by measurements of ballast contact pressure and deflection.
