The process of designing an architectural building facade involves juggling between these multifaceted objectives. Architects need to consider not just materials and climate, but also the human and cultural elements involved. A balance between function and aesthetics, art and science, needs to be achieved.

"Context Matters: Rejecting Flats for Quality Design in Kent" In Kent, an inspector's refusal of 52 flats highlights the importance of context-sensitive architecture. Despite the site's potential for housing, overlooking its surroundings resulted in a rejected proposal. Reflecting the area's gradient with diverse materials was noted, yet overlooking level changes led to an intrusive design. Introducing foreign materials further distanced the project from its locale. Moreover, concerns over overshadowing neighbouring properties underscored the need for thoughtful planning. This decision reinforces the NPPF's emphasis on creating harmonious, high-quality environments. Let's champion design that integrates seamlessly into its context, enhancing both aesthetics and liveability. #planning #design Trewin Design Architects

In the world of architecture, the science of sound can all too often be overlooked in favour of visual appearance and structural considerations. This is a bad mistake, as overlooking acoustics can profoundly impact a space's overall experience and functionality. From concert halls to office buildings, the way sound behaves within an environment can make or break its intended purpose. This is where the importance of acoustics in architectural design comes into play. https://lnkd.in/e95pdvTu

This architectural composition for a mixed-use development is visually and ecologically forward-thinking: - **Design Fluidity**: The intertwined, serpentine structure of the towers offers a dynamic aesthetic, breaking from conventional vertical architecture. - **Biophilic Design**: The liberal use of terraced greenery brings nature into the urban environment, improving air quality and resident well-being. - **Water Feature**: The reflective waterway at the base of the towers adds tranquility and a cooling effect to the development area. - **Aesthetic Appeal**: The design's balance of natural elements with futuristic architecture makes it a potential city landmark. - **Innovative Engineering**: The construction of such a complex would require advanced engineering techniques, representing a pinnacle of modern construction. The design rates highly for its potential to revolutionize urban living spaces, promoting sustainability, community, and well-being in a dense city setting.

Something I learned today about architecture: 🌳 "Less is not more," says Thomas Heatherwick. Our brains crave complexity, much like how nature restores our attention. 🧠 Psychologists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory backs this. We need buildings that engage and fascinate us. 🏙️ Yet, we’ve neglected the 'nutritional value' of our buildings. Architects often prioritize interiors, overlooking the exteriors that shape our daily experiences. Imagine—thousands pass by, but few step inside. ♻️ Heatherwick highlights a "dirty secret" of construction: environmental impact. 1 billion square feet of buildings are demolished annually in the US. That’s half of Washington, DC! 🌍 We need "thousand-year thinking" in architecture. Emotion is a function too, one we should celebrate in every structure we design.
