Time to give a heads-up: We are almost halfway through the fourth cohort of the DESY Start-up School. The participating scientists already became familiar with tools in business development planning, budget setting, and sales strategies, and have gained unique insights from the mentoring CEOs. This year, our DESY Start-up Office team has joined forces with our collaborators at the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI). As a result, a new addition for the students is the introduction of start-up scaling strategies, featuring practical insights and perspectives from investors and various enterprises. A big thank you for a valuable fourth webinar goes to the mentors from DPI Larry Schor Michael Flavin and Robert Okabe. And as usual, a thank you to Pegram Harrison as moderator for navigating and putting all the pieces together. We encourage you all to continue the thrilling journey as sciencepreneur - inspired by a quote from the last webinar: "Amazing science stuck in the lab won’t change the world". #journey #sciencepreneur #workingonthebusinessmodell #fromseedtoscale The program is free of charge for the participants and organized by DESY, in cooperation with Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and receives additional funding from the Helmholtz Association.

The Fellowship team has been using the 'pause' between graduating one cohort and starting the next, to do a number of things. This includes a review of our MERL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Reflection and Learning) processes and systems. Tracey Konstant, who has been working with us on this, has helped us to weave together the two different approaches of Theory of Change and Outcomes Mapping. These two elements of MERL are really in conversation with one another – on the one hand, Theory of Change provides a working theory to help rationalise a project but it does not describe the whole system, and it may be incorrect. As a counterbalance therefore, it's important to include something which is more sensitive and responsive to what emerges in practice. This is where Outcomes Mapping can be useful. By simply asking what has changed, an organisation can both test its theory and gain insights into developments and changes that extend beyond what it was able to predict. These then become useful for refining theTheory of Change. In our process of review, we found, for example, that some of our Alumni are already forging new ways of leading that are different to the current models of leadership in the sector. Previously, we hadn't been so explicit in capturing this as an outcome, and seeking it out in our M&E processes. Now we are finding ways to do this. How is your organisation working with MERL and the related tools of Theory of Change and Outcomes Mapping?

Hard to find the words to describe what the last 2 weeks have been like. Think I’ll go with, of existential value… Massive thanks to the MIT Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology & QUT (Queensland University of Technology) MBA global partnership program. I’d had a taste of what a MIT session might be like with Scott Stern in Brisbane a few months ago but nothing prepares you for the intensity of an ‘on college’ experience. Existential value is where I think I’m landing… I like to think I’m pretty good at drinking from the fire hose but this was like attempting to guzzle a fire hydrant. But, we did it. My team was next level, Caitlin Steffensen, Benjamin Mack & Dwayne Warman and coached by the supportive Carmen Pascoe back in AUS - I’m glad we shared this time together. Now to go find that oar to pickup, leaning into the future with mens et manus Rachel Peters Card. Last shout out goes to Stu Krusell… Thanks for your kind words and thought provocation, I loved this as a way to close out the 2 weeks: Dream up the kind of world you want to live in. Dream out loud. Harvard professor Josh Lerner explains the risks and requirements of public intervention in establishing a thriving venture capital and entrepreneurial ecosystem. In this episode of the Fund Shack podcast, Professor Lerner tells Ross Butler that seeding a venture capital industry is a difficult and slow process - it's not just the case of emulating Silicon Valley. With reference to his classic work, 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', Ross Butler asks for Josh's key recommendations, and in particular whether increasing the supply of venture capital or the demand for it, is the more sensible route for policymakers. With reference to the US, Japan, Australia, the EU and Great Britain, this wide-ranging conversation looks at where policymakers are going right - and wrong - when trying to promote entrepreneurial risk taking and institutional venture capital. We close with a look at the importance of ethics when working at the cutting edge of scientific innovation. #venturecapital #fundshack #podcast #venturecapitalecosystem #venturecapitalist

1moIt was a pleasure to participate in the program sponsored by the DESY Start-up Office. I especially enjoyed meeting the scientist-entrepreneurs challenging themselves, taking risks, and boldly exploring how to translate their research into commercial ventures — all of that in pursuit of the exciting possibility that their work may one day changes lives! It’s inspiring and important work and I thank the DESY Start-up Office for their efforts to make a difference.
