Checkpoint Charlie Reverie: A Student’s Encounter with Modernist Legacy In Berlin’s heart, where histories collide, Stands the Checkpoint Charlie apartments, a modernist pride. By Koolhaas and Sauerbruch, its structure unfolds, A narrative of past and present, intricately told. Seven stories rise with twenty-one homes, An elevated skeleton where legacy roams. Once customs and allied forces held their sway, Now homes and memories in layers play. The entrance hall, vast, a Le Corbusier baton, Echoes grand, with whispers of times bygone. No lightbulbs shine, yet ACME’s glow I recall, A magical orb, illuminating a student’s thrall. Through halls of camouflage, the urban tapestry weaves, Spaces where function and form interleave. Balconies and porticos, a dance in the sky, An architectural dialogue that catches the eye. Walking through history, a film on rewind, My tutor Matthias, REM’s genius combined. Faces of fame, yet a lightbulb within, A spark of ambition, where dreams begin. Caught in the grandeur, the scale so immense, A cinematic moment, intense and dense. In the shadows of masters, a student’s quest, To surpass, to shine, to be the very best. Checkpoint Charlie, a monument to strive, A beacon of design where past lives thrive. In its corridors, I found my path, Guided by architects’ wisdom, a light in the aftermath. #CheckpointCharlie #OMA #RemKoolhaas #MatthiasSauerbruch #BerlinArchitecture #IBA1987 #ModernistLegacy #ArchitecturalExperience #StudentJourney #UrbanCamouflage #ArchitecturalIcons #DesignInspiration #HistoricMonuments

Perceptual Grid - Reflections on our design work - Part 3 In the tranquility of Bastides, where shadows play with ancient stones, I first learned to listen to architecture’s subtle murmur. These early lessons, absorbed while juggling multiple jobs to put myself through school, have stayed with me. Decades later, they influence our current projects, shaped by what we call the 'Perceptual Grid'. This approach helps bridge the past with the present, allowing each space to evolve as it's felt. It's about creating architectural experiences that not only exists in time but also converses with it, reinterpreting tradition for modern times. We hope this post contributes to you finding your joy. Hand Sketch by Howard Chu, Saintes, France 1993

Random thought 🗣️ 🖼️: In the realm of creativity, art and architecture converge seamlessly, each enriching the other in a beautiful symbiosis. Artistry infuses architecture with soul, turning blueprints into immersive experiences that resonate with meaning and give life to a material environment. Together, they craft environments where every space tells a story, where innovation meets inspiration, and where design transcends mere function to evoke profound emotions and stir the imagination. And I think this approach combined with a vision of seeing structure and design as an extension of nature instead of a mere addition in an area, would result is immaculate progress in architecture. Both in terms of design and sustainability.

Reimagining the Wheel: From Regent Tyres to Cosmic Geometry Inspired by Regent Tyres’ vintage remould advertising in Soho’s Brewer Street, this reverse card design bridges motoring, esoteric philosophy, and critical architecture. Drawing on Crowley’s Thoth Tarot—where the mystic rose with its 23 petals symbolizes creation—the concept explores the act of “remoulding” as a transformative force. From the linear precision of car wheels to the multidirectional geometry of a cosmic sphere, the design symbolizes the journey of imagination driving forward. Crowley’s theories, rooted in mysticism, are reinterpreted here through the lens of architecture: the 23rd point becomes a generative force, shaping both circles and spaces. This reworking connects the material and the metaphysical—an architectural nod to remoulding ideas and unlocking new dimensions of thought. How can such intersections between motoring, mysticism, and geometry shape the future of design?

### "Echoes of Influence: My Journey with Stanley Tigerman" Stanley Tigerman’s early career experience working on the United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel under Walter Netsch at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) significantly influenced his architectural approach and artistic expressions. This involvement laid a foundational understanding of bold, modernist architecture, which Tigerman later reflected in his provocative and often satirical works. One of Tigerman's most famous pieces, the collage of Crown Hall sinking, demonstrates his critical yet humorous perspective on the architectural establishment. Crown Hall, designed by Mies van der Rohe, is a paragon of modernist architecture. Tigerman’s collage metaphorically critiques the dominance and perceived rigidity of Mies's influence on architecture. Later, Tigerman created the "Bombs Away" collage, where he depicted Frank Gehry’s architectural forms being bombed. This piece continues Tigerman's trend of using visual art to comment on and challenge the architectural status quo and its leading figures. In a personal homage, I have updated this collage to include the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel, reflecting my respect for Tigerman and my own experiences at SOM. This addition underscores the personal and professional connections formed with Tigerman, including meeting him in Chicago and engaging in informal activities like playing softball with his office team. This gesture not only honors Tigerman’s legacy but also integrates our shared history within the broader narrative of architectural discourse and critique. By blending these elements, this updated collage becomes a multi-layered piece that connects Tigerman’s influence to my professional journey, and the iconic structures that have shaped both our perspectives. This confluence of experiences highlights the enduring impact of mentorship and the continual dialogue between past and present. #StanleyTigerman #ArchitecturalLegacy #SkidmoreOwingsMerrill #ChicagoArchitecture #ModernistCritique #ArchitecturalCollage #AirForceAcademyChapel #ArchitecturalAssociation #ACMEShoreditch #ArchitectureJourney #ArtAndArchitecture #ArchitecturalMentorship #DesignCritique #InfluentialArchitects

The Architectural Conservancy Ontario (Toronto branch) is hosting their annual symposium on September 29th! Snapshot of what to expect: Every year, the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario’s Toronto Branch hosts a symposium exploring current heritage ideas. Past themes have included Housing and Heritage, Main Streets, Modernist Schools, and Demolition. This year’s symposium will examine the phenomenon of Intangible Heritage or heritage that is distinct from built form. Intangible Heritage can relate to traditions, activities, commerce, communities, identities, and storytelling. There’s a sense in which all heritage has intangible elements. While it certainly has relationships with physical spaces, what makes Intangible Heritage different from built heritage is that its significance lies outside traditional evaluations of architectural merit. It is use, not aesthetics, that defines Intangible Heritage. Or is it? The narratives of Intangible Heritage are complex, intersectional, and in motion. Looking more closely at its presence across Toronto—from Kensington Market to Little Jamaica to Suburban Banquet Halls—this year’s symposium will highlight some of the things the term Intangible Heritage can and should mean and why.
