Australian Think Tank – Next Meeting Oct 12 The Zonta Says NOW Think Tank brings together Zontians from around Australia (and overseas) who are interested in progressing gender-equal climate action. We meet via Zoom and listen to interesting speakers, exchange ideas and discuss what is happening at home and abroad. We are delighted to announce that our next guest speaker will be Anjali Sharma, who featured on the ABC’s Australian Story in March 2024. At 18 years of age, Anjali was the lead litigant of the Sharma vs Environment Minister class action, where a group of young people successfully argued that, when deciding on the expansion of coal mines, the Minister of the Environment had a duty of care to protect young people from the impacts of climate change. Following this case, climate change science is no longer disputed in Australian courts. The case was overturned on appeal, as the courts ruled that there were no laws in place that the Minister had to consider that covered future generations. So Anjali worked with Independent MP, David Pocock to create them! Sadly, the Climate Change Amendment (Duty of Care and Intergenerational Climate Equity) Bill was not passed. Let’s hear from Anjali of the stories behind the headlines and what she plans next. Meeting time: 3.00pm-4.30pm in Qld • Australian Story video: https://lnkd.in/gMTAJdR4 • Zoom registration link: https://lnkd.in/gBzme3kY... • Australian Think Tank meetings (where you can sign up to go on the mailing list as well as register for the meeting): https://lnkd.in/gsqbmuYS #zontathinktank #genderequity #climateaction #zontaintl #zontabrisbane

Very excited about the fourth edition of the “Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Policy Tracker” now being available. Kudos to James Lloyd and the team for all your hard work on getting this across the line. The report reveals critical gaps in financing NbS and the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and local communities—who manage 50% of the world’s land but receive less than 1% of climate funding. Key findings include: 🌿 Only one-third (33%) of nature-related policies published since the Paris Agreement have allocated budgets. 🌿Less than two in ten (19%) of policies specifically reference Indigenous Peoples. 🌿Almost four in ten (38%) of policies reference adaptation strategies. The report calls for governments to triple nature finance by 2030 to meet the Rio Convention targets. 🔗 Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/dRpiA_Vx
