Last week, the Alabama state Senate passed a bill that restricts diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and what it terms as "divisive concepts" in certain public entities. This development in Alabama is not isolated; it's part of a broader trend, as it is one of 14 states considering similar legislation this year alone. This legislation specifically targets public schools, universities, and other state agencies, barring DEI programs or "divisive concepts." As a global equity practitioner, I find myself questioning the implications of this law, particularly regarding its impact on our students. How do we continue to offer equitable support without the freedom to address the uncomfortable truths around homophobia, racism, sexism, and ableism, to list a few?
I am looking forward to be apart of a community discussion with Tony Nelson and Daniella Lubey, MSOD and friends from Diversity Abroad next week on Thurs, March 7th from 2-3PM ET on how to build support and sustain structures for diverse students experiences in these times.
