Happy #WorldTeachersDay! Have you heard about the awesome #WasteSortedSchools program? It’s all about helping schools in #WesternAustralia promote responsible waste management while having fun! This program focuses on waste avoidance and resource recovery, helping to instill positive environmental values in both students and the whole school community. WasteSorted Schools, run by the #WasteAuthority, provides fantastic resources for projects like recycling, composting, and even worm farming! 🐛 Many schools love these hands-on activities that connect to the Western Australian Curriculum. Plus, it’s completely free for all schools in WA! 🎓 Find out more: https://ow.ly/9G9G50TQqCr Department of Education, Western Australia #wasteeducation #WAschools #education#waste #wastemanagement #environment

We proudly sponsored yesterday's annual Children’s #GnangaraGroundwaterFestival held at Whiteman Park during #NationalWaterWeek. Middle and upper primary students gathered to explore the importance of water through engaging, hands-on activities. The festival kicked off with the Mega Water Session, introducing groundwater concepts, followed by lively demonstrations. Our staff became teachers for the day, including demonstrating how to build an edible aquifer out of ice cream and cereal, to show the recharge of #groundwater after rainfall, and presenting on the importance of wetlands and the benefits to the ecosystem. After completing the activities with our staff, the children had more of an understanding about water and how they can help protect our drinking water sources. The festival is a significant event aimed at educating students about groundwater, sustainability and environmental topics through interactive activities. Water is critical to improving economic and social outcomes for First Nations peoples. The National Agreement on Closing the Gap aims to redress this through the development of a new inland waters target. We have also been working with the State Government to increase Aboriginal inclusion in the water industry, through water allocation planning and licensing processes. Some people have the best jobs! Our Indian Ocean Territories team were on the remote islands of Cocos (Keeling) this year to investigate and install groundwater telemetry equipment to help with water security. Recently, our experts in aquatic science, hydrology, measurement, planning, and licensing visited landowners in the Warren Donnelly region to discuss farm dam bypasses. These structures allow water to flow around dams to help maintain environmental water flows downstream. As the climate continues to dry, bypasses are becoming even more important for sharing water between licencees and the environment. Talking to farmers on-site about how their systems work and leveraging the depth of experience within the department across disciplines, creates opportunities for collaborative problem solving and a more integrated approach. Together, we're committed to sustainable #WaterManagement practices that benefit both our communities and the #environment. #DWERatWork #ClimateResilience #BetterTogether #collaboration #SustainableFarming #SustainableCommunities #NationalWaterWeek
