On the basis of the post below, are you striving to be an academic or a scientist?

Yes, “how long the H-index is” does matter in academia. But for science, it does NOT. Big discoveries are often made by people with small metrics. Examples are: 1. Katalin Karikó got ONLY ~300 citations/year in 2005 when she discovered the potential use of mRNA in therapeutics. 2. Andre Geim had ONLY ~1500 citations/year in 2004 when his team discovered graphene. 3. Frances Arnold got ONLY ~200 citations/year in 1993 when she demonstrated the directed evolution of enzymes. (And many others) 📍 In academia: 1. Faculty positions are much easier to get when you have strong metrics after PhD+postdoc. 2. Funding is much easier to get when you you have big metrics. It’s the case for most countries. 3. Strong postdocs prefer to join groups where professors have big profiles. 📍 In science: 1. Big discoveries do not care about the journal. Publishing in Nature/Science does not turn the study into a discovery. 2. Big ideas do not care about funding. Most discoveries were made without millions of $$$ in allocated budgets. 3. Great talents full of ideas can be found at any place. You don’t need to go to “top university” to find them. ❗️My point is simple: Academia ≠ science. #PhD #research #science

📢 Dive into the World of Research with Jakub Jagielski 📚🔬 Our next seminar is a prelude to Jakub's upcoming doctoral dissertation defense. He will be sharing insights into his research titled "Synthesis and Physicochemical Properties of Liquid Crystalline Lipid Nanoparticles Based on Glyceryl Monooleate, Phytantriol: Potential Applications as Drug Carriers and Contrast Agents." During the seminar, Jakub will unveil the objectives and results of his doctoral thesis, which delves deep into the synthesis and characterization of physicochemical and biological properties of liquid crystalline dispersions of lipid nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are based on glyceryl monooleate and phytantriol, with a focus on their potential applications as drug carriers and contrast agents. 🌡️🧪 Additionally, Jakub will present findings related to the synthesis and characterization of the physical and biological properties of lipid nanoparticles he designed. These nanoparticles are based on mixtures of glyceryl monooleate and glyceryl monolaurate and hold promise as carriers for antibiotics. 💊🦠

🔬 Excited to share our latest publication in Angewandte Chemie! 📚 As a collaborator and co-author, I'm proud to contribute to this innovative research led by Alessandro Porchetta (https://lnkd.in/dn2fETrE) Università di Roma Tor Vergata, who is also a close friend and an exceptional scientist. 🌟 Our study introduces the concept of Toehold Switch DNA hairpins to control the activity of the RNA-programmed CRISPR effector protein Cas12a. By incorporating a rationally designed locked protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) into the loop of the Toehold Switch, we've developed a novel strategy for regulating Cas12a in response to molecular inputs. 💡 What's particularly exciting is our demonstration of how switching the Toehold DNA from a hairpin to a duplex conformation through strand displacement reactions allows us to modulate the accessibility of the PAM, thereby controlling Cas12a's binding and cleavage activities. This approach opens up exciting possibilities for precise gene editing and molecular diagnostics. 🔍 Furthermore, we showcase the versatility of our system for sensing applications, enabling rapid detection of IgG antibodies and small molecules with high sensitivity and specificity, even within complex matrices. This has profound implications for diagnostic and therapeutic developments in various fields, including healthcare and biotechnology. 🚀 Our collaborative effort highlights the power of teamwork and interdisciplinary approaches in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.
