Here's more evidence of changing post-PhD career paths, this time for graduates of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. More recent cohorts were less likely to go into PI roles, and more likely to go into other academic roles, industry research, non-research, and even non-science roles. While in this particular example the majority of graduates stayed in academia, it's a pretty reasonable assumption that academia will be the minority outcome for EMBL graduates soon. This was so much fun to do, and it wasn't even planned! In fact, it started as an interview where one of the questions to prepare was: "what tip would you give to new PhD students?" Obviously as a PhD student one of the major goals is to become and independent researcher and publish papers, go to conferences, network, etc etc. The evening before the interview I silently sat down in my desk chair, staring into space and thinking: what has really made a difference in the past four year that I didn't expect would be important. What would I have wanted to know upfront? I came up with an entire list to the video crew and we decided last minute to make an extra video of the 5 most important things to know. This workshop explains statistical methods designed to determine if your experimental results are real or caused by natural variation. They go over the basic parameters such as average, standard deviation, and variance. They define what a normal distribution is and compare it to a t distribution. They explain what probability is and how it relates to the area under a normal or t distribution. Included are detailed examples using equations to disprove the Null hypothesis and how to use a two sample t test and p values to prove if your data is real or just natural error.  This workshop is designed with a focus on students who have an interest in participating in science fairs. It is the experience of the author that statistical analysis plays a significant role in the experimental report and that judges base their scores heavily on the statistical presentation. These concepts are presented in these books, written by Gerald Bauldock. The Valley Science Fair is based on his son's experiences participating in the Delaware Valley Science Fair. Bittersweet Symphony: Marking the End of an Era Today marks a bittersweet milestone – I've officially completed my final class in the Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program! For the past few years, this subject has been my constant companion. We've delved into the intricate dance of molecules, unraveled the mysteries of cellular processes, and explored the very essence of life itself. There were moments of pure exhilaration – that "aha!" moment when a complex concept clicked, the thrill of discovery during a late-night lab experiment. There were also moments of frustration – the nights spent deciphering dense textbooks, the stress of balancing exams with research projects. But through it all, the fascination with this microscopic world never faltered. It's been a journey of immense personal and intellectual growth. A heartfelt thank you to my professors for igniting my passion for this field and for guiding me through the labyrinth of scientific inquiry. To my fellow classmates, thanks for the countless cups of coffee shared, the late-night study sessions, and the unwavering support. We did it! ☕ As I step onto this new chapter, I'm brimming with excitement for the future of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
