The best way to understand journalists is to read what they write. As PR people we need to be at the forefront of the news agenda but also really immerse ourselves in what specific journalists are interested in, what their pages are about, how they operate with PR people. Just starting out? Grab yourself a Read.ly subscription and start reading everything. Every week I read The Economist and the Sunday Times plus PR Week of course, I have newsletters set up from all of the newspapers nationally and regionally, and then monthly I scour every magazine via Read.ly. Not totally the wonderful Monocle. Plus if we are working on something new, I set up Google alerts and do searches via Read.ly to find what is being said and who writes about what. It’s easy to build up your understanding and knowledge in a very short amount of time. You just have to be interested.

“What is your deadline?” Never forget to ask this question when a journalist calls for an interview. In media relations, you’re serving journalists as well as your organization. Don’t forget about their needs. Journalists work on tight deadlines, and knowing their deadlines will help you get them the person they need, by the time they need them. It will also ensure that your organization’s voice isn’t left out of a story when you have important messaging to convey. Just getting around to this expose of big $ international PR. Surely, the author exaggerates...it's what he does. But one line stuck out to me because it's been clear in my career. DO NOT accept the fancy dinner. Simple. A cup of coffee and a scone maybe....a cheap pen...a t shirt. But if someone wants to buy you an expensive meal or give you a nice attache case "for attending" there are strings attached. always. always. I've worked on the PR side of this too, even had clients you might not like. But I didn't try to bribe reporters with fancy gifts (in fact, we lost one major client over that issue). And as a journalist, I'm pretty sure I didn't accept anything much more than that cup of coffee. PR people can be very useful to journalists and visa versa.
