While the terms "animal house" and "research animal facility" might seem interchangeable at first glance, there are some key differences between them. Using the appropriate terminology shows respect for the seriousness and ethical considerations involved in research animal facilities and avoids any potential misinterpretations. Choosing the appropriate terminology in scientific communication reflects a commitment to accuracy, transparency, and ethical research practices. It emphasizes the rigorous ethical and regulatory framework governing the care and use of animals in research. This training program is aimed to correct the erroneous immediate impact of using one term over the other, which might seem minor in developing countries and recognize that proper housing and management of animal facilities are essential to animal well-being, to the quality of research data and teaching or testing programs in which animals are used, and to the health and safety of personnel. The welfare of animal used in research, education and testing is a function of their husbandry which include housing and the conditions of such housing. Their macro/microenvironment have significant impact on their welfare, which in turn impacts the validity of data generated from the use of these animals. Assuming that there are animals held on the premises of your Institutions, where are these animals kept? In a shack, built with corrugated iron sheets, in the basement of the building or a long walking distance from the faculty buildings? Who manages the place? A trained staff or everyone who has an animal in there goes there whenever they like? These are vital concerns that will be addressed in this training. Register for using the link bit.ly/acuret-itp After registration and confirmation of payment, you will receive an email containing information about the training. The output of some great multi-disciplinary between myself and colleagues from Harper Adams University (Mark Rutter, Annabelle Beaver, Gemma Charlton, Jen Sadler), Nottingham Trent University (Dr Samantha Ward), The Open University (Clara Mancini), University of Liverpool (Joseph Neary) and the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (Christian Nawroth) is now available to read here: https://lnkd.in/ev2BKQ4v. This is the output of an Animal Welfare Research Network funded workshop looking at stakeholder and researcher perceptions on human-animal and machine-animal interactions. Key outputs in relation to advancing the scientific discipline of machine-animal interactions in animals under human care: - We should share knowledge across disciplines - there is much we can learn from one another! - This is an ever evolving field and we should make sure we focus on validated methods - We should be promoting positive welfare states, not just avoiding negative states - Animal perspectives should be at the core of our designs

The 3R-Kompetenznetzwerk NRW is getting on #BOARD24! "𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗥𝗗" stands for 𝗕e 𝗢pen about 𝗔nimal 𝗥esearch 𝗗ay. This global social media campaign is organized by the European Animal Research Association (EARA) and supported by the wider biomedical community, both public and private. We regularly visit high-schools together with researchers and animal welfare officers and talk about biomedical animal research and animal welfare, the 3Rs principle and the 3Rs methods. In this two-hour event, the students are not only informed about the 3R principle and biomedical animal research, but they also have the opportunity to express their opinions and ask their questions with the experts. 🏫 🔬 🐭 ▶ The program consists of three blocks, starting with a brief introduction to animal research, animal welfare and the legal framework. ▶ In the second block, the 3Rs principle and the methods of replacement, reduction and refinement used in research are explained in detail. ▶ In the last block, the experts block, e.g. the animal welfare officers explain their responsibilities and tasks in order to ensure the best possible animal welfare for biomedical progress. We realize that the audience show great interest and curiosity in the topic, which indicates that there is a great need to further inform young people and involve them more in the social debate. 💡 Further information can be found on our homepage: https://lnkd.in/gfSwhyEc 💗 Only with more openness and transparency can science create more acceptance in society for necessary animal research. We need to move beyond animal testing policy based on the 3Rs. It doesn't work, not for animals and not for the majority of the public that doesn't want to see animals suffer in laboratories. "According to the most recent polls, citizens are increasingly concerned about the welfare of animals used in science and agree that more needs to be done to replace their use (Clemence and Leaman, 2016; European Citizen’s Initiative, 2016; Funk and Rainie, 2015; Jones, 2017). Despite these demands and the reasonable doubts they cast on the potential of the 3Rs to lead to the ultimate replacement of animals in research (see below), the 3Rs continue to be a popular policy tool for legislators and research facilities that use them as an example of their efforts to ameliorate the suffering of animals in research. The worldwide acceptance and simultaneous failure of the 3Rs seem to have turned the maxim, intentionally or not, into a means of whitewashing the images of those profiting from research vis-à-vis the public: scientists, research industries, and regulators." https://lnkd.in/efjWvPyj
