The role of supply chain management in reducing cost to patient. Ensuring products end up with customers is an important objective for most businesses, but it is absolutely critical in healthcare, where lives depend on receiving supplies and medications. Delivering quality patient care in a timely fashion is crucial as is evidenced by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The right medical products also need to be delivered to patients at a specific time. Ideally, the whole supply chain should be designed to lower costs and improve patient care and safety by preventing delays in treatment. Once in place, effective supply chain management can help to reduce medical errors caused by incorrect or expired medications being used on patients. Effective healthcare supply chain management usually results in better patient outcomes through the improvement of healthcare costs and access to necessary resources for health professionals. Connections, collaboration and communications between freight forwarders, suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors must facilitate the movement of goods, services and information. That way, hospitals and other healthcare facilities can better meet patient needs and improve their financial results. At Freightways Global Solutions, we partner with players in the healthcare value chain to ensure robust supply chain. A full supply chain is often part of health groups’ outside spending—up to 40% of all costs. Healthcare supply chain that functions at an optimal level can increase resilience, improve patient care ,raise physician satisfaction, reduce cost to the patient and lead to increased healthcare access. #CostToPatient #HealthcareAccess. During my visits, observations, and analysis, I observed that the implementation of the Logistics Management Information System (LMIS) has fundamentally shifted the supply chain from a traditional push model to a more responsive pull system. This transition allows for precise identification of medicine requirements at the Service Delivery Point (SDP) level, ensuring that stock levels are closely aligned with actual consumption patterns. Each health facility's demand can vary significantly, and the system effectively adjusts stock to remain within the optimal minimum and maximum thresholds. Several facilities reported frequent receipt of unnecessary medicines, highlighting that items were dispatched from the central store despite not being required. Conversely, critical medicines were often supplied in inadequate quantities. This discrepancy stems from a lack of visibility into the real-time stock levels at the SDP. The LMIS, however, mitigates this issue by providing comprehensive oversight, including real-time alerts for stockouts, overstocking, and upcoming expirations, thereby enabling more efficient and balanced stock management across various facilities. Base on the observations, I strongly suggest that LMIS serves as the backbone of an effective health supply chain. Unfortunately, many NGOs still lack this vital tool, leading to recurring challenges in medicine distribution. Addressing these gaps with LMIS would significantly enhance supply chain operations and improve healthcare outcomes.

My experience with LUM has been excellent in our organization. We use the most modern technology, with PAR systems as a software platform and storage solutions. Medline, a top leader in the supply chain for medical items, offers LUM and bulk stock, making our supply chain very resilient. Yes, the inventory is customized for the needs of each unit and patient specialty point of care, with a lot of automation involved. However, the most important aspect here is the human element. All this effort and positive results are due to the hard work of teams in the organization at all levels, as well as vendors and others. I believe the future is bright with the development of robotics and technology. We still have a long way to go to integrate AI into the entire supply chain ecosystem in our healthcare organizations. LUM allows for very lean inventory management, but the key is to maintain balance and healthy days on hand. During the pandemic, overstocking was prevalent in many healthcare organizations. We need to learn from past events that changed the supply chain and adapt to new challenges.
