The Coating Contradiction: Can one more layer save weight!? 🤔 Enabling light-weight cabin materials for aircraft seats. The weight of an aircraft has immense influence on the fuel consumption. Flying each day thousands of miles, each ounce counts. A good way to leverage this is to reduce the weight of economy class seats, as these are installed in large numbers in aircraft. And even if you think that every gram has been reduced over the decades, there is always room for more. The thermoformed plastic generally used in seat construction has a high density and, therefore, a high weight.
