The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the immense strain on healthcare professionals, revealing the urgent need to address physician burnout. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association investigated the interplay between physician well-being and perceived EHR work stress at an academic healthcare system during the peak of the pandemic. Physicians, especially in certain specialties, spend substantial time on documentation, message management, and clinical review using the EHR. The study reveals that for every hour of direct patient care, physicians spend nearly 2 hours on EHR and desk work. Perceived EHR stress and prescription authorization message volumes had a significant association with higher odds of burnout. Researchers also emphasized the importance of broader factors, such as perceived value alignment, feeling valued, teamwork efficiency, and the work atmosphere, as key determinants of burnout. The odds of burnout were notably higher among physicians in psychiatry and COVID-intense specialties, physicians in busy workspaces, and physicians who did not feel valued and/or perceived their values were not aligned with those of their leaders. The study underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing physician burnout. Healthcare organizations should prioritize creating supportive work environments, facilitating alignment with leadership, and valuing physician contributions. Actionable measures to reduce EHR-related workload — such as delegation of prescription authorization — are crucial.
