Excellent interview covering topics important to both the counter cult community and the broader society.
It’s been a while since I made a film myself, and this discussion with award-winning documentary filmmakers Cecilia Peck and Inbal B. Lessner, ACE was inspiring – so fantastic to hear about the amount of thought and consideration for survivors that went into the creation of their series Escaping Twin Flames and Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult. A lot of cult coverage skews sensationalist, and that adds to a belief that something like this could never happen to us. But it could happen to anyone. And I think all documentary makers dealing with sensitive subject matters will find something useful in this conversation. Hope you’ll take a listen. https://lnkd.in/g-eYmwq4

The average person will watch more than 78,000 hours of TV in their lifetime. Entertainment has a huge impact on our lives, and who tells the stories we watch shapes our views. As we celebrate the success of the Barbie movie of 2023, the entertainment industry is still far from being equal. 🎥 Of the top 100 grossing films in 2023, only 14 were by women. 🎥 In 2023, only four of the top films were directed by women of color. And in terms of ethnic diversity, just 26 of the 116 directors came from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. 🎥 In 2021, 26.9 percent of directors hired by Netflix were women, a figure that significantly outpaced any major film distributor. Do you pay attention whose movies and TV shows do you watch? Are you supporting and watching and thus increasing demand for women created entertainment? #crushmovement #filmindustry #dei #diversityequityinclusion #barbiemovie
#Barbie was the top-grossing film of 2023 with director Greta Gerwig at the helm. A female director responsible for the TOP film of 2023? We love to see it, but we’d love to see *more* of it. The USC reported: ➡️ In 2023, of the 116 directors behind top-grossing films, only 14 (or 12.1%) were women. ➡️ Between 2007 and 2023, women directed just 6% of top-grossing fictional films. “This report offers a contrast to those who might celebrate the dawning of change in Hollywood after a year in which Barbie topped the box office,” concluded the USC study’s authors. “One film or one director are simply not enough to create the sea-change that is still needed behind the camera. Until studios, executives and producers alter the way they make decisions about who is qualified and available to work as a director on top-grossing films, there is little reason to believe that optimism is warranted.”

How do different generations perceive work and public service? How are organizations dealing with the changing perceptions and motivations among generations in the workforce and those who serve the public? How are younger generations being prepared to join the workforce? These are some of the questions we’re striving to answer in our current documentary film project. More coming soon! In the meantime, here is a behind the scenes look at some recent interviews we conducted with Surry-Yadkin Works! #filmmaking #NorthCarolina #county #local #documentary #government #publicservice #workforce

Blog Feature: A @cinequestorg Sneak Peek at Harsimran Sandhu’s, @simasandhini Short Film Pulp, @pulp_shortfilm Support Sandhu by watching the shorts program at 9:30AM on March 16th at the Hammer Theatre. If you only attend the festival's feature-length screenings, you'll miss a local gem tucked into the short film program. Pulp, a debut short directed by San Jose native Harsimran Sandhu, is a tale about the immigrant experience. Pulp discusses how many immigrant parents might not know how to express love adequately through words but often show it through their actions. "I fell in love with the imagery of giving someone the bigger half of an orange," Sandhu says as he discusses the film's title and key symbol. "It's a mother eating less so her daughter can eat more… It's 'I want to peel it for you. I want to do the work for you so you can reap the rewards.'" Pulp discusses how many immigrant parents might not know how to express love adequately through words but often show it through their actions. The film also portrays the pull between finding a "responsible" job and following the siren's song of a creative career—a divergence many children of immigrants must navigate. "You're supposed to pay your parents back. You're supposed to take care of them and make their sacrifices worth it—and there's such a clash with the pursuit of your own dreams," Sandhu reflects. "That's something that I've personally struggled with: that balance." Plenty of his peers face the same dilemma. "I've had so many late-night talks with my friends about 'What can we do?' And no one knows the answer," Sandhu says. "We're all figuring it out. There's no blueprint." 🎉 Celebrating 🎥🌟 I am thrilled to share that Say My Name, my deeply personal film, has received the prestigious Awareness Award at the SydFest Independent Film Festival 2024. This recognition means the world to me, as it validates the purpose behind creating this film: to raise awareness about critical issues that have shaped my life. 🌟 Why Say My Name? Say My Name is more than a film; it’s a testament to resilience, hope, and transformation. Through my journey, I’ve experienced firsthand the impact of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, and suicidality. These are topics that need our attention, compassion, and understanding. 🎥 The Power of Storytelling. As a filmmaker and writer, I believe in the power of storytelling. Our stories connect us, heal us, and inspire change. Say My Name, and the book that it is based on, Sleeping Under the Bridge, allowed me to share my truth, and in doing so, I hope it resonates with others who have faced similar challenges. Together, we can break the silence, dismantle stigma, and create safe spaces for healing. 🙏 Gratitude I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this film possible. To my incredible team, cast, crew, and supporters—thank you. Your dedication and passion brought this project to life. Let’s continue using art to ignite conversations and foster empathy. 🌟 A Call to Action Now, more than ever, let’s amplify our voices. Share this short film and my books with your networks and engage in discussions. There is more to come in this space! Let’s be the change we wish to see in the world. Pardon the timely pun, but let's stare down the "elephant in the womb," for TV shows, films, and documentary content. I'm weary of the "woke/non-woke" stigmas that permeate Hollywood right now. Several potential sponsors, advertisers, investors, or Executive Producers said this week our projects will never see commercial success unless and until we "change our way of thinking," to be more mainstream! I learned long ago, IF you are trying to appeal to everyone you will not please many at all! Our documentaries, TV shows, and films address suicide, depression, addiction, domestic violence (the root and the social effects), sexual assault, bullying, homelessness, keeping women and children safe, and other topics you can see here (https://lnkd.in/gEaj5fdG). If we are producing "woke" projects then so be it! I feel EVERYONE has the right to decide their fate; what happens to their own body, their own sexual orientation, and no one has the right to tell them if, how, and when to do something they do not choose to do. Creating legislation to subvert basic human rights or deny those to someone, especially based on religion, race, color, creed or sexual orientation is immoral, if not illegal. Many of the people in the US right now, including some deranged public officials seem to respect Russia and the other dictators in the world MORE than they respect the US or Canada, and its traditions and laws. I have BEEN to Russia, where it is legal to beat your spouse and not be arrested. If people want to support that mentality, please MOVE THERE! I say take a stand and not live in fear that you will lose business or money or friends, business associates, or contacts on LinkedIn for doing so. Way too many people try so hard to impress others and NOT to piss someone off, they forget how to hold to their own morals and beliefs in life. Now, if you agree with me, and want to support someone who is doing all he can to help save lives and make this a safer, saner, and more responsible environment AND entertain people, join me. See our projects at HandcraftFilm.com and DadDownstairs.com. See the TV shows, the movies, our plans for media including TV shows, films, docs, a digital magazine and all translated into a dozen languages. See our short film platform at FiveMinuteMovie.com for those who want shorter, more direct viewing options. If you DO want to support us, by adding your name to the end credits of our TV shows, or advertise with us, click here. https://lnkd.in/gB8X-KUZ If on the other hand, you do not believe in these rights, want to restrict the rights of others, or want to vote for wanna-be dictators who cater to the rich on the backs of the poor, fine, but please, do not contact us for any reason, you are not welcome in our circle. There I took a stand, I hope others will do the same. #documentary #TVshow #movie #film #suicide #suicideawareness #abuse #domestviolence #domesticabuse #addiction #teen #TVproducer #Indigenous
