Be honest. Do you LOVE or HATE social media? If you had to choose between the two? There are probably as many things to be thankful for about this sea change in communication and broadcasting as there are to despise. One of the things I love about social media? It gives everyone a voice! 🙌 ...But that's also the tricky part, right? On the positive side, this democratization of speech has empowered marginalized groups to share their stories and perspectives, previously suppressed by traditional media gatekeepers. Activists can organize movements, witnesses can break news directly to the public, and ordinary people from all walks of life can connect meaningfully over shared interests and experiences. ✨ But this same unfiltered access also gives a platform to hate speech, misinformation, and cyberbullying. 😔 The anonymity and distance provided by social media can embolden people to act in ways they never would in person. The spread of inflammatory content and falsehoods can have harmful real-world consequences. Furthermore, the algorithms designed to keep us engaged often prioritize the most sensational or divisive content, leading to echo chambers and filter bubbles. 😕 This makes it more difficult for us to understand differing viewpoints, fostering polarization and making it harder to find common ground. The challenge with social media lies in balancing the freedom of expression with the need for accountability and civility. We need to find ways to support positive and constructive voices while mitigating the harms of those who misuse the platform. This will involve a combination of technological solutions, improved media literacy, and a renewed societal commitment to respectful and informed discourse. 💡 The double-edged sword of social media is a reflection of ourselves – it has the potential to bring out the best and the worst in humanity. What is an equity-based approach to marketing? An example: ➡️ A brand conducts research of underrepresented audiences ➡️ The insights that come from these audiences are predominantly stereotypes and generalizations ➡️ They are rooted in truth, and from these audiences, but they’re harmful ➡️ Rather than regurgitate these stereotypes in an attempt to resonate with the audience, go one step further ➡️ Don't pander to the audience, but also don't abandon the audience...bring them along ➡️ As marketers and advertisers, we are responsible to break these stereotypes, not reinforce them. We know that these audiences should be afforded individuality and diversity within their own culture, and anything less is irresponsible ➡️ What's the result? A story that is deep and culturally nuanced, it avoids dilution and it dives beyond the typical stereotypes and generalizations. It's not only beneficial to society, but more engaging to audiences. Sometimes people ask me what do I do in research....This is what I am really interested in: I explore how marketing practices and decisions and public policies produce, reproduce, or resist social power relations, ideologies, social (in)justice, and social (ex)inclusion and the access to marketplaces for less privileged consumers. With a Critical Discourse Analysis approach I analyse texts, talk and images found in policies, written media, social media, and peoples conversations. In today's capitalist society, it's not enough for the marketing industry to focus solely on price or promotion.
