Well my 'Skills' journey and research topic is well in flight in 2024 and I have already interviewed 4 notables with some equally fascinating people to come. A reminder, I am conducting some global research into the topic of #skillstransformation to better understand the why, the what and the how, as well as unpacking some of the challenges and limitations of a 'skills' strategy. Last week I caught up with Rick Devine, the CEO and Founder of Talentsky, a market first public skill sharing network, allowing people to understand and share their skills, and even make money through coaching others in their expert rated skills. My first share from Rick Devine hears him discussing shrinking rates of employability, the 'skills gap' and pitching the need to rise up above #skills, to focus on the knowledge and work actions needed to do a job. Rick believes that people don't know their skills (nor are that interested) and we need to ask them different questions: What do you know how to do? What have you done? (these bring in work actions and knowledge) . By asking these questions, we can then use smart technology to figure out the skills used to generate comparable data between people. It reminds me of one of TQSolutions clients that has a concept of 'Types of Work' that is a constellation or group of skills. It is the 'types of work' or work actions / knowledge that is a well understood common language. Interested in people's thoughts on this? Should we be lifting the language to Work Actions and Knowledge or should we persist with skills? (noting Rick is not suggesting we lose skills from the equation, just that we need to talk at a higher level).
