Promoting innovation in higher education requires organisational architecture that fosters collaboration and streamlines decision-making processes. However, selecting the optimal structure remains a challenge for many institutions. In Executive Briefing 005 "University Innovation Toolkit", our research team explored key innovation architectures and their suitability for different purposes. Pleased to announce a new publication written with friend and colleague Timothy Winders, Ph.D. The article "Digital Layers and Human Ties: Navigating the CIO's Dilemma in Higher Education" discusses the challenge faced by university CIOs as they balance the benefits of digital tools with the risk of eroding human connections on campus. It explores how technology impacts professional identity and relationships among staff, encouraging a more mindful approach to using technology in academic environments to maintain authentic interactions and community. #Technology #Efficiency #HumanConnection #HigherEducation

How can we as Fontys University of Applied Sciences, as Research Group Business Innovation and as #researchers create societal impact? We invest in solving wicked problems by involving students and collaborating with schools, universities, companies, and citizens. Defining what impact means is crucial and we are searching for a common understanding. For this reason the conference one of our researchers visited (Dr. Sonja Floto-Stammen) brought many insights: What an inspiring conference "Onderzoek & Impact" hosted by Nationaal Regieorgaan Praktijkgericht Onderzoek SIA and Vereniging Hogescholen. The program featured sessions on stimulating, measuring, and showcasing impact through practice-oriented (applied) research. Highlights included: ⚠️Discussions on the visible and measurable impacts of research (show what you do!). 👍🏻A keynote by Kees Klomp on shifting from head to heart. 🫵🏻Practical case studies demonstrating real-world impact. 🌟Emphasis on the need for diverse impact metrics. 👉🏻Calls for integrating new educational models, promoting mutual learning, and prioritizing urgent, collaborative change. #PracticeOrientedResearch #Impact #OnderzoekEnImpact #HigherEducation #AppliedResearch #SustainableLiving #Innovation #EducationalChange #MutualLearning #PostGrowth #ValueOverMoney #FontysResearchGroup

Excellent article on the importance of Digital Transformation and IT in HE. 👇🏽
Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen O’Brien, has opened a new, comprehensive, and far-reaching collection of essays published by the Higher Education Policy Institute exploring the impact of technology on universities and students and how it can improve higher education. In the first chapter, Professor O’Brien discusses the digital landscape of a modern university and makes the case to elevate digital transformation to a strategic level. She says: “Those of us in management roles see core enterprise systems and digital technologies as the fabric of a higher education institution as much as classrooms, books, and labs. “Digital technologies are the transport vehicles for the student journey from enquiry to graduation, and the means, mode, and often subject of much of our research. “Universities are (rightly) places of multiple voices and priorities. Yet in this multi-polar environment, it is vital that the voice of IT and digital is heard clearly and consistently.” Read the full essay 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wIj2I Universities UK l Higher Education Policy Institute l Russell Group of Universities l Claire Whitelaw l Lucian J. 📢 New working paper by Leonard Kelleher and Tomas Coates Ulrichsen on dynamic capabilities used by universities for knowledge exchange in a 'new normal' of more frequent and disruptive shocks (e.g. Covid-19). 👉 https://lnkd.in/ecDxFAcP Shocks increase uncertainty and precautionary behaviour, disrupting innovation systems. Universities are increasingly expected to play more active roles in driving innovation, particularly after disruptive shocks. In our 'new normal' of more frequent shocks, it is vital we identify how universities strategically adjust following these disruptions. We can do this by identifying 'dynamic capabilities' universities use to reconfigure and recombine resources to sense, seize, and scale innovation opportunities. in this study, we interviewed leaders in 17 UK universities about their strategic responses to boost knowledge exchange and innovation in the post-pandemic landscape. Main findings: 🔸Universities used a wide range of dynamic capabilities to strategically adjust knowledge exchange & innovation activities post-pandemic. 🔸The capabilities predominantly used would be expected to generate incremental, path dependent change rather than transformative societal change. 🔸This suggests a reflexivity failure which may limit universities' role in managing sustainability transitions. Our working paper provides a tool intended to address this failure, to help university leaders enhance their strategic management abilities for knowledge exchange, including in transition management. #knowledgeexchange #sustainabledevelopmentgoals

Lifelong Learner & Higher Education Leader | Advancing Inclusive Excellence & Strategic Growth in the Western U.S.
🚀 **Reflecting on "The Innovator's Dilemma": A Higher Education Perspective** 📘 As I delve into Clayton Christensen's groundbreaking work, the parallels between the business world's innovation challenges and those in higher education become increasingly clear. Here are a few key takeaways that stand out: - **1️⃣ The Double-Edged Sword of Listening**: While tuning into student needs fosters immediate innovation, it's crucial not to lose sight of the horizon. Balancing current demands with the anticipation of future needs is key to sustainable growth. - **2️⃣ The Power of Disruptive Innovation**: It’s essential for the academic sector to distinguish between incremental improvements and truly disruptive changes. The latter holds the potential to radically expand access to education. - **3️⃣ Expanding Access Through Innovation**: Overcoming the fear of cannibalizing traditional formats, just as the disk drive industry did, can lead to broader student engagement. Embracing online and hybrid learning models can complement and enhance our educational offerings. These reflections from Chapter 1 of "The Innovator's Dilemma" inspire us to embrace a forward-thinking approach to educational innovation. What disruptive innovations do you see shaping the future of higher education? #InnovatorsDilemma #HigherEducation #StudentSuccess #EducationalInnovation #TheClarkCommunique
