According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), 66% of U.S. households (86.9 million homes) own a pet. Dogs are the most popular pet (65.1 million U.S. households own a dog), followed by cats (46.5 million households) and freshwater fish (11.1 million households). Pet supply stores continue to benefit from increased pet ownership and as such, continue expanding. Pets Supplies Plus and Wag N' Wash Natural Pet Food & Grooming recently reported double-digit mid-year growth with 23 sold franchise agreements and 16 store openings respectively, bringing its store totals to 730 locations in 43 states and 24 locations nationwide. Together, they plan to open at least 45 stores by year-end. Nick Russo, chief development and stores officer of Pet Supplies Plus Group says he’s focused on opening more Pet Supplies Plus’s stores and expanding Wag N’ Wash to new markets.

With Franchise Update Media's #MUFC2024 coming up in about 3 weeks, I think it's about time we take a peek under the hood of how multi-unit operators will react to different industries this year. First up? The space that keeps Sherri Fishman, CFE's favorite child healthy, pet services. People tend to gravitate to what they love when looking for refuge. As MUMBOs look for less complex businesses to operate, they naturally think of a business that takes care of a member of their family (and it sure helps most pet services businesses have FANTASTIC EBITDA margins). This year, #MUFC2024 will be boasting pet services brands like Central Bark USA, Dogdrop, Dogtopia, Pet Evolution, Scenthound, Camp Bow Wow, Salty Dawg Pet Salon + Bakery, Zoom Room Dog Training and Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming in and around the trade show floor! My take? With the post-COVID explosion of pet adoption, professionalized management flocking to the space, macroeconomic pressures hurting the F&B space and the average life-time value of a dog parent going up as ancillary services become more available; bet on these people being among the busiest next month. Pet franchises are BOOMING! But, don't just join any of them. Here are a few questions to ask a franchisor when doing your due diligence. No, these aren't just the FAQ - these are the HELPFUL questions to ask beyond item 19, franchisee validation calls, etc. - Understand the support they provide you. Have them break it down site selection, construction, pre-sales, ongoing acquisition and retention, daily operations, etc. Ask what they do exactly in these categories.. not just that "yeah, we help with marketing" - Are they proactive or reactive? Where are they positioning themselves in the market - How much are they investing in technology and what does that mean for their franchisees - What kind of kickbacks do they get from their vendors Those are a few of the questions I recommend anyone looking into a franchise ask, not just pet related.
