Cannes is in full swing and the good news keep on coming! Turns out we used Google AI to analyse 8,000 YouTube ad campaigns over the last six months. One of the things we discovered is that successful ads portrayed representation — ads challenging stereotypes, featuring characters in norm-defying roles and including a range of perspectives. AI can also help us uncover areas where representation in ads can be improved - for example, by highlighting tokenism, superficial efforts at representation, or casting that did not represent the diversity of the wider population. As a DEI advocate, this feels like real progress: yet more evidence of the importance of diversity in the advertising industry, and tangible data to help brands show up in a more inclusive way. What do great ads have in common? Which stories ignite emotions? Which videos break through and what really works on YouTube? These questions are not new but this year and ahead of Cannes Lions, my team took a very different approach to answer them. We built a custom LLM to process both text and video to extracts insights including sentiment, themes, visual elements, spoken language, music, cultural references, and more…looking back at all the great campaigns brands ran on YouTube this year, and analyzed 8000 top performing ads. What we learned: Having Gemini as a partner to help quickly distill and illuminate data frees up the space of a creative to spend less time manually coding a video, and more time being curious and interrogating the outputs. For example, Gemini took these thousands of inputs and went beyond surface level to uncover rich insights like how advertisers were expressing DEI through individuality, or showed us that ads focused on sustainability went beyond just environmental topics but also dove into economic and social sustainability. My question is: did they use AI to write this announcement? From Reddit, Inc.'s announcement of having acquired ad creative optimization platform, Memorable AI: "Through this acquisition, Reddit advertisers will have access to Memorable AI’s best-in-class tools to enhance their campaign planning and drive higher performance. As we integrate Memorable into our ad stack, our partners will be able to see performance benefits from creative insights from previous ads, better creative effectiveness, and automation that guides their creative towards maximum performance and return on ad spend." Thin this was human-generated or AI-generated? I wouldn't make the call because even humans tend to follow boilerplate structures and language for press releases. In real life, people don't tend to use terms like "best-in-class," though I guess it's no worse than "best-of-breed." #AI #language #marketing
