This marks the date when for the first time the European Commission delegated the implementation of part of the fund to a European Executive Agency and new funding possibilities opened for beneficiaries.   Since its launch, the fund has achieved great results, supporting fisheries science and innovative blue economy solutions for citizens, companies, fishing and coastal communities and the environment. 📰 🐋 The Hub's latest newsletter features an important series of workshops on climate change and marine spatial planning held in Namibia in September last year. These workshops were in partnership with the Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science (Cefas, UK) under the theme “fair and inclusive decision-making for a healthy ocean whereby people and planet flourish”. → In the workshops, the researchers engaged with fishers, managers, scientists, policy makers and anyone else whose life is intertwined with the ocean in Namibia. ❝ A policy brief will be created and shared with policymakers based on the workshops. One of the primary issues discussed was Namibia’s draft Marine Spatial Planning strategic plan. It’s a unique but not very well-known #biome of stunning natural beauty, home to many plants, animals and peoples, but under increasing threat from agricultural expansion. During this dialogue, the indigenous leaders Dinamam Tuxá and Eliane Xunakalo, together with the traditional peoples’ leadership of Lourdes Nascimento and Samuel – the general coordinator and the advisor for the Cerrado Network, respectively – will tell their personal stories about this the critical relevance and the challenges taking place in the biome. The guests will approach the current reality faced by the Cerrado Peoples in their territory and the vital importance of this land for their lives and for the conservation of biodiversity and halting climate change. They will share their perspectives about the protection of nature and their cultures from and the need to tackle the increasing threats of rapid soy expansion for animal feed and livestock production over their lands. The Netherlands is one of the main importers of this soy produced in the Cerrado, as the country is an important trading route and end-user of soy for feed in the intensive Dutch livestock industry. 🌊 🌏 🐟 Biodiversity matters! Yesterday, more than 160 participants attended the Bologna conference of Spoke 2 "Sea" of the NBFC - National Biodiversity Future Center . Innovative tools in the field of conservation, restoration, and mitigation of impact on marine biodiversity were discussed, along with the development of biodiversity-friendly aquaculture through low carbon feed, genetics, IMTA, biosecurity, and omics tools. The NBFC - National Biodiversity Future Center is one of five national centers dedicated to frontier research involving institutions and businesses throughout Italy. More than 1,500 researchers and 48 partner institutions are committed to monitor, conserve, restore, and valorize Italian and Mediterranean biodiversity.

Reported by IntraFish Media on Friday, Russia is preparing to withdraw from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), a significant move with implications for international ocean research and natural resource management. ICES, established in 1902 and governed by a convention dating back to 1964, plays a pivotal role in advancing scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and providing advice on conservation, management, and sustainability goals. The council's scientific advice informs crucial decisions, such as the allocation of fishing quotas for major whitefish and pelagic species in the North Atlantic and Baltic Seas. Russia's impending departure from ICES, following a suspension from participation since March 2022, marks a considerable setback for international ocean research and international fisheries management, but also underscores the challenges faced by global cooperation in marine science and resource management. The situation highlights the critical importance of maintaining robust international cooperation. Collaborative efforts are essential for the sustainable management of our oceans. At the 9th WORLD FISHERIES CONGRESS, the stark underrepresentation of Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) practitioners was evident. Out of thousands, only a handful were from the SSF community. This gap between academic discussions and on-the-ground realities highlighted the need for more diverse voices in these forums. Despite this, TINTA strategized with other fisher experts on how to boost SSF's presence in future conversations and decision-making processes. Encouragingly, there's a broad agreement on the importance of elevating SSF voices. This event sparked new ideas and potential partnerships aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice. It's clear: we need to lower barriers and enrich the dialogue with real-world SSF experiences.

According to The World Bank, an eye-watering $6 trillion are wasted every year on #subsidies for #agriculture, #fishing, and #fossilfuels that generate net negative outcomes for people and our planet. At the same time, #seaweed continues to be perceived as a niche sector and in most countries – with notable exceptions such as Korea – it remains an institutional orphan. What would be the impact of redirecting a fraction of those unproductive funds to seaweed? A few of the ideas that emerged from our official #HLPF side event last week: ✳ improve #technology, #infrastructure, and #research, including through supporting #genebanking efforts ✳ strengthen #education and #communication about seaweed, to help change the narrative, improve consumer awareness, and support strong outreach while avoiding greenwashing and hype ✳ restore #coastalecosystems and strengthen #resilience of #coastal and #Indigenous populations, helping them develop alternative, sustainable #livelihoods, including by providing high quality seeds ✳ help improve the #transparency of the #fashion industry ✳ improve #agricultural #sustainability, increasing #productivity through #biostimulants (#fertilizer additives), and possibly reducing ruminants’ #methane emissions ✳ and support #policy and #coordination at the national and global levels, including harmonizing #standards, through a comprehensive, adequately resourced global mechanism ➡ Investing in the seaweed sector has the potential to generate significant impact Proud to have designed and moderated this official #HLPF side event.
