In 2006, Ford was dealing with a tremendous lack of psychological safety. As Mulally illustrates in this video, this can lead to some major problems in an organization, where people are afraid to speak up for fear of being wrong, believing their job, their status, or their credibility may be at stake. Why is this such an issue? Problems go unaddressed, compound on each other, and can ultimately cause workplace injuries or even sink an entire corporation. So how do we fix it? Don't shoot the messenger, but instead tackle the problem directly. Help them find a solution, or direct them where they might find one. This is especially important for those in management or leadership positions. The best functioning teams will always have more known issues than the equivalent poor functioning team. As issues become acknowledged, they give direction for process or team improvement, allowing for better collaboration and better solutions to the issue at hand. There's an old cliche that illustrates this very well: "Two heads are better than one"

Leading from the front. Have you ever pulled a plane? I have—though not alone, of course! An empty Boeing 737-800 weighs 90,701 pounds, and back in 2017, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in United's employee event. Our team managed to move a 737 ten feet! More than 200 employees from across the company participated in a highly successful team-building event. This included a variety of team-oriented activities, culminating in a collaborative effort to pack disaster relief meals. All that lead to the main event, THE PLANE PULL! Besides me 😁 what stands out about the team I was assigned to? If you said, they don't look like they can pull a car..well we were both wrong. Here's what I learnt from this experience: 》Appearances are deceiving. Judging someone's capabilities based solely on appearance is inaccurate. 》Training works! Prior to the pull we had a physio school us in the art of pulling. This was a game changer. 》Leaders lead. I was nominated to be the anchor and without hesitation, I realized I needed to be in front. Traditionally we've seen the anchor at the back, but in that moment the team needed inspiration. Pivotal moments can happen at any time, we need to be ready to step into them. Certainly, this is a clear call to wisdom in navigating the complex waters of life. The metaphor of the ship and its crew is particularly powerful, as it represents not only the individual journey but also the context of the relationships and connections we weave along the way. The choice of the crew - the people who surround us - becomes crucial as they will influence not only our journey but also our destiny. Trust, as emphasized, is the glue that holds this team together. Without it, the ship risks sinking into the turbulent waters of uncertainties and disappointments. Furthermore, the warning not to allow anyone to steer us off course or sabotage our journey is an important reminder of our responsibility to protect our direction and our values. It remains essential, therefore, to remain vigilant and defend our "ship" - our authentic selves and our aspirations - from any external or internal threats. All of this invites us to deeply reflect on our relationships and goals, and to make wise decisions that help us successfully navigate through the choppy waters of life…
