Many child protection challenges emerge in the context of travel and tourism. Where children often fall victim to child labor, sexual exploitation, and trafficking. With an increasing number of travellers globally, children are becoming more vulnerable. “So far we have collectively failed. Child sexual abuse and exploitation flourish because we fail to protect the children. We see progress, but so much work remains.” - H.M Queen Silvia of Sweden The United Nations hosted a high-level event on October 16th to emphasise child protection as a crucial component of sustainable travel and tourism. H.M Queen Silvia stressed the importance of #collaboration to ensure children's safety: “Collectively, we need to do more. We need to agree on standards and goals. And they must be implemented to make a real difference on the ground.” With collaboration in mind, World Childhood Foundation hosted its 2023 Gala in New York that same day. Which is now on the path of raising $1 million with a singular goal: to end sexual abuse, exploitation, and violence against children. Be the change you want to see in the world! This is a quote often and incorrectly attributed to Gandhi. And whilst what he said was more poetic and long-winded :) the core of the idea remains the same. I am a massive fan of people and organizations that embody this. Especially in South Africa where we are so ready to bad mouth and so slow to get off our couches and do. Here are two organizations that have this quote at their core and who do some truly incredible work. 1) https://lnkd.in/dEguGgnP A KZN-based organization that began as 1 man using his 1 hour of 'exercise time' during the hard lockdown of COVID to explore his local suburban nature reserve and began noticing and removing snares. In the two years since this has grown to a fully-fledged movement responsible for removing thousands of snares across KZN in an effort to protect our wildlife, assist and audit reserves, train rangers and produce a skilled and active group of volunteers who continue to grow the organization. It's lead by volunteers, championed by communities and has spread faster and and further than the small group of neighbours and friends who begun it could ever have imagined. 2) https://lnkd.in/dAseCdVH Tidy towns is a community project, for the community, by the community! It began in a small KZN coastal town that had gotten tired of seeing its beaches strewn with litter, their facilities in a state of disrepair and increases in crime and grime in general. The project has since grown to encompass multiple towns, provide full-time employment to dozens, and seen significant increases in returning tourism and true synergy between local municipalities and the communities they serve with unprecedented results. There are many more such organisations from local CPFs to community projects and public-private partnerships. But in a journalistic culture of 'if it bleeds it leads' they seldom make the splash in the media they should. Just today, I was having a conversation with a colleague who as well is planning their participation in the Trinbago Coastal Clean-up. As we chatted a bit on the difficulty of ensuring a smooth sailing (pun intended 😃 mine is Down D islands), we chuckled on how it often looks too easy, that persons underestimate the work that's needed. I cannot tell a lie, I genuinely enjoy with depth, some of the things I get to participate in, plan and execute, not often am I the one enjoying the fruit of the exercise, but always behind the scene with other commmitted persons asking; is this accurate?, are the numbers correct? do we have all emergency plans in place? what's our logistics looking like? what are the worst case scenarios? who's going to be there that we specifically have to cater to? do we have enough catering? are we on budget? will we be on time? what's the weather looking like? do we have security? are just some of the questions that flood our minds as we attempt to cover every possibility in executing events especially national, off-island events like these. So the next time you see us looking frustrated or full extreme...overly smiley and focused, don't assume we got it all together because the ONLY time I will be breathing full breaths and not short less-oxygenated ones, will be at 1:35pm on Saturday afternoon when everyone is back in their cars on on their way home safely. 🙂 Also this only works when you have people who are committed to seeing success to the end, there’s no “I” here, it’s US/WE. I appreciate the people who support these initiatives in the office, they are the silent heroes.
