Well it was a win for Disney+ Hotstar ICC World Cup 2023 was a financial win for Disney+ Hotstar, even though India couldn't win the finals. The tournament generated a record-breaking amount of ad revenue, and Hotstar saw a significant increase in viewership. According to BusinessToday, the tournament is estimated to have brought in Rs 2,000-Rs 2,200 crore in ad revenues. This is more than double the amount of ad revenue generated from the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The favorable match timings and free streaming on Disney+ Hotstar are expected to have contributed to this increase. Hotstar also saw a significant increase in viewership during the tournament. The platform hit a peak of 5.3 crore concurrent viewers during India's semi-final match against New Zealand. This is the highest-ever viewership for a live sports event on Disney+ Hotstar. The increase in ad revenue and viewership is likely to have a positive impact on Disney+ Hotstar's financial performance. The company is currently in the midst of a streaming war with other major players, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. This financial win is a much-needed boost for Disney+ Hotstar as it looks to consolidate its position in the Indian streaming market. Why has Netflix started investing in live sports, first with an exhibition tennis match & now a multi-year deal for wrestling with WWE? A major reason is that live sport is THE biggest driver of new subscriber sign-ups as this chart from Antenna clearly shows. The exclusive streaming of a National Football League (NFL) Wild Card game on NBCUniversal's Peacock is the biggest single subscriber acquisition event ever recorded by Antenna, with an estimated 2.8m new customers added in a single weekend. Peacock reported 16.3m concurrent devices using its app during the game, which was estimated to have accounted for 30% of all US Internet traffic at peak. While WWE may not generate quite that level of interest, Netflix will have to take steps to ensure its Content Delivery Network (CDN) is up to the task of handling live streaming at scale, which its architecture was never originally built for. #streaming #netflix #peacock #sports #sportsbroadcasting #nfl #wweraw

Why is IPL free on JioCinema? #IPL is a big cricket tournament in India. JioCinema reported that around 12 crore viewers logged in to watch the opening match, and the numbers are expected to go up as the season continues. When Disney+ Hotstar had the digital streaming rights to IPL. They charged Rs 1499 as a subscription fee for watching IPL 2022 and they earned 1200 crore from subscriptions and 1100 crore from ads.(total: 2300 crore). But then why is Jio not using the same strategy? JioCinema might seem crazy for offering IPL for free, but there's a method to the madness! JioCinema wants Everyone to enjoy the IPL! By making it free, they're reaching a huge audience. More viewers means more eyeballs on ads! JioCinema makes money by showing commercials during the matches. With a bigger audience, JioCinema can potentially charge advertisers more for ad space during matches. Free IPL = More viewers! More viewers More ad revenue! (Jio earned Big From ads!) Jio hopes by getting you hooked on #IPL for free, you'll stick around for their other content too! Let us compare viewership numbers to understand this : Around 8 crore people watched the opening match of IPL 2022 (streamed by Disney+ Hotstar). On the other hand, around 12 crore people tuned in to watch IPL 2024's opening match (streamed by JioCinema). That is a 50% bump in the audience! In 2023, JioCinema made a whopping 3239 crore in ad revenue out of IPL 2023. That is more than Disney+ Hotstar's subscription and advertisement revenue combined!
