Beauty can be found anywhere – even on active landfill sites when monitoring personnel come from the western side of the mountains, where the only time it was humid was when there was a humdinger of a storm on its way, like the one pictured. Landfill sites pose some challenges for operators who need to minimise the emissions of methane and other environmental impacts such as odour, litter, pests and potential contamination of surface water and groundwater. Controls are more often than not prescribed by the NSW EPA along with monitoring requirements (locations, frequency, analyses) in a licence. Some clients will additionally have management plans which go above and beyond what is required to address specific site matters as part of their own philosophy. RCA Australia can assist with the monitoring – surface methane levels, subsurface monitoring (wells / pits) of landfill gasses (methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, oxygen) and monitoring of spaces in which these gasses may accumulate, monitoring of surface waters and of groundwaters. We can do the hectic municipal sites just as well as the quiet regional sites whether the frequency is daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly. We can help clients with responsive sampling – if the site is close enough our people can come and do the sampling or if the site is too far away for the logistics to work then we can set up a sampling kit and instructions so that on-site personnel can fulfill the site’s obligations. RCA Australia processes the data, comparing to any EPL limits or otherwise the criteria specified by the NSW EPA for gasses and waters, and prepare reports for each event and over the monitoring period including the annual reports sent to the NSW EPA. RCA Australia further prepare the data for Annual Returns or otherwise assist clients by maintaining registers throughout the monitoring period for their own personnel to prepare the required documentation. How does the EPA make sure that water is free of contamination? We head out and test it! 🏃♀️ Here are a couple of shots of our field samplers from the EPA’s monitoring and surveillance team. Their job is to sample liquid waste (or effluent), groundwaters and surface waters from EPA licensed waste and industrial facilities. Here’s how it works: 💧They start by taking a sample from a site’s wastewater treatment facility, from the rainwater that has run off the site, or the groundwater under the site (by using a pump as seen in the photo). 🧪These samples are then brought back to one of the four EPA water labs around Ireland. The samples are analysed for many different things – for example the pH level or the types of metals found in it. ❌If a site is found to have a high level of a certain substance or exceeds their licence conditions, this information is flagged with the relevant EPA inspector and an investigation is opened. This way the EPA can work with the site to ensure only safely treated water is released back into the environment. We do all this to make sure that the activities of these facilities – for example, landfills, factories or waste collection sites – aren’t having a negative impact on water and the wider environment. Did you know that stormwater runoff is a major source of environmental pollution? ⛈️ Besides the physical damage that can be caused by sediment movement during heavy rainfall and other erosion-related issues, stormwater picks up debris and pollutants from roadways, parking lots, open garbage containments, and industrial locations, ultimately depositing them into lakes, streams, and other waterways. These pollutants often include things like metals, oils, organics, excess nutrients, and many other dissolved and particulate foulants.
