While one should applaud facilities for implementing these workplace reforms, but there is a certain conflict of interest in facilities promoting themselves in this respect when the primary business of facilities is scientific excellence. As a (male) single parent of two, a teenager and a 3 year old, a pattern of sustained persecution was established by my then employer ANSTO on the basis of a perception of a lack of dedication. There was no gain for ANSTO giving a statistical outlier fair consideration. ANSTO is as effective at promoting itself as any large facility, and so insight into their negligence is lacking and driven by self-interest. To be fair it is not the fault of facilities to fall into this pattern, as it is demanded politically. However the conflict of interest remains.
"Based on my own personal journey, I would encourage girls and women to enter the world of #STEM as it offers plenty of exciting opportunities for learning, career development, and building long-lasting personal relationships. There is a lot of work to do in terms of educating women on the breadth of roles that exist within the STEM workforce, encouraging more women to tell their stories and act as mentors, and promoting equal sharing of family life and responsibilities. By fostering a culture of inclusivity, promoting mentorship, and challenging traditional gender norms, we can create a more diverse and equitable STEM landscape and redefine what it means to be a woman in science." A fantastic feature article by Victoria Garcia Sakai, our Division Head of Neutron Spectroscopy from Innovation News Network on her personal journey in the world of STEM. #internationalwomensday2024 #womeninscience ➡ https://lnkd.in/einBKreQ

Happy National Women in Science and Engineering Day 🎉 WISE celebrates helping to #MoveTheDial towards gender parity in STEM for 40 years today. WISE, born out of the Finniston Report and originally a one-year campaign, has spent four decades pushing boundaries and bridging gaps in science and engineering. Today, it stands as a beacon for gender parity, striving to create a world where everyone has an equal chance to excel in STEM. In 1984, when WISE began, women comprised only 7% of graduate engineers and 3% of professional engineers in the UK. Fast forward 40 years, and women comprise over 22% of graduates in engineering and tech, with 10.9% of professional engineers. In the last 40 years, WISE has evolved to champion gender parity across all STEM sectors, helping a huge number of individuals, organisations, and businesses, with a wide range of campaigns to raise the profile of women and girls in STEM. WISE’s larger mission is to achieve gender parity in the workplace, specifically in STEM fields. Steps towards this goal can be big or small, but they all matter in contributing to change, and we wish to celebrate them all. Today, tomorrow, and every day, Grace May champions women. Despite the significant progress of women in STEM careers, they still only represent 29% of the STEM workforce. However, the journey to gender equality in #tech roles begins from a young age… The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) highlights in their article, 45% of women are not encouraged to consider STEM careers in school. The IET’s Young Women Engineers (YWE) Awards is one of the many fantastic initiatives in the UK seeking to change this, by celebrating women working in modern engineering to help eliminate the perception that engineering is predominantly a career for men. Through our partnerships and connections with North East Scotland College and Robert Gordon University, it’s key for us to work together, champion engineering careers to the next generation of girls, #investinwomen, #inspireinclusion and generate greater diversity within the industry. It is clear to me that the important global problems of the day need diversity of thought and experience to unlock effective solutions. Driving equity means driving better outcomes for our organisation, as well as society as a whole. The push for gender parity in STEM was the focus of my discussion with Stephen Carroll and Caroline Hepker on Bloomberg Radio as we explored what needs to be done in order to achieve this. While progress on female representation in STEM has been made, it is clear that we have a long way to go. I shared my perspective on why we need to focus on: - Education systems and government resources - From primary to higher education, it is important to ensure that STEM curricula resonate with and challenge students, as well as equal representation and opportunity in classrooms. - The critical role of businesses - It starts with intention. This is about hiring practices, learning and development initiatives to accelerate high potential women, creating inclusive workplace cultures and fostering an environment in which women’s careers can thrive. - Trust and investment in female founders - Currently 2% of VC investment goes to women entrepreneurs despite consistent evidence demonstrating greater success with women in the room. For example, last year women-led technology start-ups delivered 35% better returns and created six times more jobs. - You can’t be what you can’t see - Role models are hugely important to inspire and empower women throughout the entirety of their education and careers. To close the interview, Caroline Hepker asked me what my advice to young aspiring scientists and technologists is. My answer…Be curious. What would your answer be? Today is International Women's Day #iwd2024, as well as the kickoff of #britishscienceweek - huge day for people who love celebrating women in STEM 🙏 We focus on that year round. But today, we want to focus on something less positive. Because IWD isn't just a celebration, it's a day for action - until we reach equality, until every girl believes she can grow up to be anything. There's no two ways about it. STEM is still dealing with a serious gender gap. From perceptions of STEM, to dealing with being the only girl in your class, to challenging experiences in the workplace, to being taken less seriously, to stereotypes... There are so many things that need addressing, that need addressing better, that need to change more. But we're really fortunate to not be working alone. Most recently, we've heard about the importance of community from Dr Abigail Otchere and Donna Otchere, who created SiSTEM UK to make sure all women have a support network, and role models to look up to. We have our partners in #PlanetPossibility, we have the tireless work of the women in our own organisation - Caitlin Farrah developing the activities that inspire young women to engage with STEM on our STEM truck visits, Ims Taylor getting our message out, Marilyn Comrie paving the way for women in STEM, business, in boardrooms and on site... We could write a thousand posts shouting out the brilliant women we see inspiring us every day (If you want to hear a cross section of amazing stories, feel free to check out SEE ME BE ME > https://lnkd.in/eeBdC6Ty). Let's keep working for change, inspiring and uplifting each other ⚡️ If you've got a woman in STEM you'd love to shout out, tag her! #scienceeducation #science #stem #stemeducation #planetpossibility #diversityinstem #steminspiration #diversity #diversityandinclusion #stemcareers #stemforall #physicsfacts #sciencefacts #womeninstem #womeninscience

🌟 Celebrating International Women's Day: Honouring Women in STEM 🌟 Today, on International Women's Day, let's take a moment to recognise the incredible contributions of women in STEM fields around the globe. From pioneering research to groundbreaking innovations, women have played an integral role in shaping the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It's important to shine a light on the hidden figures of women in STEM – those whose achievements were often overlooked or overshadowed by their male counterparts. From Rosalind Franklin's crucial role in the discovery of DNA's structure to Katherine Johnson's (pictured) groundbreaking work at NASA, these trailblazing women paved the way for future generations of female scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. However, despite the progress we've made, there's still much work to be done to achieve true gender diversity and equality in STEM. Women continue to be underrepresented in many STEM fields, facing barriers such as stereotypes, biases, and lack of support. Only 35% of university students in STEM subjects in the UK are women. To truly support women in STEM, action must be taken to support access to entry points. The struggle doesn't end there. Nearly half (48%) of female STEM workers in majority-male workplaces say that sexual harassment is a problem where they work. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let's commit to fostering a more inclusive and diverse STEM community. Let's support and empower women in STEM by: 🔬 Advocating for equal opportunities and representation 🔬 Encouraging young girls to pursue STEM education and careers 🔬 Providing mentorship and support to women in STEM fields 🔬 Creating inclusive environments where all voices are heard and valued 🔬 Calling out inequalities, sexism, and harassment when we see them 🔬 Be proactive in education - we cannot leave it to others to educate us 🔬 Understanding the intersectionality of gender, race, and sexuality Let us know below in the comments what your organisation is doing to empower women to help us share best practice, and join our community to discuss further: https://lnkd.in/e4Dtx2_g Together, we can break down barriers and build a better future where everyone, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to thrive in STEM. - Scott Raven, Head of Community #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInSTEM #DiversityInSTEM #EmpowerWomen
