"There are four times more food charities in the country than grocery stores, according to the food charity Second Harvest. Those who work in the sector recognize giving out food doesn’t solve the fundamental problem that drives people to use food charities in the first place—the problem of not having enough money. ...Insufficient government support is keeping society’s poorest, including those on social assistance, from climbing out of poverty. The amount of money that people receive on disability can put them as much as around $1,000 a month below the poverty line, he said. And they often don’t have much of a cushion to fall back on. Ontarians must show they are in financial need and have assets that are within certain allowable limits to be eligible for Ontario Works or ODSP. Food charities don’t convert anyone who is food insecure to being food secure. the country has a huge policy framework failure." Your regular reminder that more food banks won't solve food insecurity. This is clearly an income problem. Poverty is a government policy choice. #EndDisabilityPoverty #BudgetTheBenefit https://lnkd.in/gUnBNsHD

Managing surplus produce is crucial to reduce food waste, support those in need, and promote environmental sustainability. By redistributing excess food, organisations like FareShare ensure that fresh produce reaches people who need it, rather than ending up in landfills. This not only helps combat hunger but also minimises the environmental impact of wasted food.
🌱 At Nationwide Produce, we're proud to partner with FareShare UK in tackling food waste and supporting those in need. As highlighted in the latest article by Fresh Produce Journal, demand for FareShare’s services is at an all-time high, with even more capacity for fresh produce donations. #FoodForThought: Addressing institutional #FoodWaste is a significant challenge...but it is doable! While the Good Samaritan Act offers federal liability protection for surplus food donations, California stands out as the first state to mandate this practice. This pioneering approach makes California's program a crucial statewide experiment that could shape how other regions tackle food waste across the country. https://loom.ly/bhs-8ho #SurplusFood #FoodPolicy

In addressing food insecurity, Greener Village serves as an emergency "first responder," shielding individuals and families from the immediate threat of hunger. While acknowledging the significance of food banks, we at Greener Village understand that we are not the ultimate solution but a vital bridge toward a food-secure future. The conversation around food insecurity often revolves around understanding its root causes and implementing transformative measures, much like the discussions led by experts at the Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph. Paul Taylor rightfully emphasizes that charity alone cannot eradicate food insecurity; it requires a deeper exploration of systemic issues. Jennifer Grenz's insights on leveraging community knowledge and land stewardship resonate deeply. Greener Village, too, believes in empowering communities and individuals on their journey toward self-sufficiency, fostering collective well-being and resilience. While acknowledging the importance of data-driven solutions, Greener Village remains committed to not just providing immediate aid but fostering sustainable solutions that address the underlying causes of food insecurity. The collective effort to transform our food systems and empower communities forms the cornerstone of Greener Village's mission to create a more food-secure future. #FoodSecurity #SustainableSolutions #EmpoweringCommunities #GreenerVillageImpact

Government funding plays a crucial role in supporting organizations like Food Depot Alimentaire, which supply essential resources to food banks and soup kitchens across New Brunswick. Stephane Sirois, Food Depot Alimentaire's executive director, emphasized the significance of this funding, with an additional $1 million contribution announced by the provincial government. Sirois highlights its impact on ensuring that food banks and community kitchens can provide a variety of fresh produce to those in need. However, as visits to food banks and soup kitchens continue to rise, it's clear that long-term solutions are needed to address food insecurity effectively. The 35% increase in visits last year highlights the urgency of this issue, with more families relying on these services for support. At Greener Village, we recognize the importance of addressing food insecurity beyond immediate relief efforts. By advocating for sustainable solutions and supporting initiatives that promote access to nutritious food for all, we can work towards building a healthier and more resilient community. Join us in our mission to combat food insecurity and support families in need. Together, we can create lasting change and ensure that no one goes hungry.
