A simple process of giving can help save someone life
“It is the best thing you could ever do. It’s so rewarding.” 💫 23-year-old Bethany from #CountyDurham donated her stem cells to save a stranger. Now, she wants to encourage more people to register with DKMS as potential lifesavers. In fact, she recently shared her story on BBC Radio Tees to help spread the word! Bethany shares: “It made me feel emotional to hear my patient was 100% cancer-free. I’d hoped it had worked but didn’t expect it to work as well as it did. Now, my patient and I are hoping to meet up… it's going to be quite surreal! But I am looking forward to it.” 🎧Listen to the full radio interview here: https://lnkd.in/ecsfgzV4 Inspired by Bethany’s story? Why not encourage your colleagues to register with #DKMS, just like Bethany has!

Why finding the right bone marrow donor is so rare Think of it like searching for your perfect match, only it's way more complicated than swiping on dating apps! Medical Matchmaking: Our cells have special markers called HLAs. For a bone marrow transplant, we need a donor with super similar markers, or things get messy. 😬 Family Ties: Your best bet's usually a sibling, but even then, it's only a 25% chance of being a close match. Ethnicity Matters: Certain markers are more common in specific ethnic groups. A diverse donor pool is HUGE for increasing someone's odds. The Needle in the Haystack: Massive registries exist, but finding the right donor can still be tough, especially for those from underrepresented ethnic groups. But there's hope! Here's how to help: Join a registry: If you're healthy & 18-40, signing up might make you someone's lifesaver. Organizations like Be The Match make it easy. Spread the word: The more people know about bone marrow donation, the better! Share posts, encourage others to sign up. One match can change everything. ❤️ #bethematch #bonemarrowdonation #dkms #datri DATRI Blood Stem Cell Donors RegistryDKMS BMST Foundation India https://wix.to/7bqVHjl #newblogpost

Earlier this year, you may have seen that we sponsored and attended the British Transplant Games, where over 1,000 transplant recipients competed in over 25 sporting events. We were lucky enough to be a big part of the Archery event, where we were able to not only raise awareness of the importance of organ donation, but also highlight some of the lesser-known impacts people can experience post-transplant. We are committed to working with the community to improve outcomes for all transplant recipients. One such impact is Graft-versus-host-disease, a life-changing condition which affects many people following stem cell transplant. In a recent survey, we found that 85% of people experiencing GVHD said it impacted their everyday mobility and physical activity, highlighting why events such as these are so important! Copywriter and long-form content creator helping health and social impact organisations make a difference. Ex-fundraiser. Specialist in Global Health.
"How long would I have lived if I hadn't driven myself into hospital?" "Maybe about another two or three weeks, it's hard to tell." It's been 15 years since I read Adrian's blog. But there was something about the way he wrote: the honesty, the hope, the humour, the hurt, the defiance... the sheer determination and courage that really stuck with me. When you work in health, it's easy to get lost in statistics. To become numb to them. Yes, 2,000 people in the UK need a stem cell transplant every year. It's a number. A big number. But really — what does it mean? It's why stories like Adrian's are so important. Because behind every number, every statistic, is a real human story, and it is these connections, these human connections that have the power to make a difference. And it is people like Adrian, who show us just how powerful this difference can be.
