“I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, the son of two public school teachers. When you have teachers as your first models, they put something special, I believe, in your spirit and soul that says that you can help others and be well yourself. Do good by helping others. That has always driven my perspective.” -Leon Walker in Housing Finance

📸 Today, LISC Policy's Matt Josephs testified before the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, emphasizing the urgent need for Congress to address housing affordability and availability in underserved communities. He advocated for the expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit through the passage of the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act; and pushed for the enactment of the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act + more.
Also ICYM: Matt wrote a blog post reflecting on the State of the Union address, discussing affordable housing, child care, climate solutions and community safety. Read it here! https://lnkd.in/eE7Eg7wz
With 10+ hours on the road for college dropoffs this weekend, I was able to catch up on te Public Money Pod from Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago with Liz Farmer and Justin Marlowe. This week's episode, on the City of Chandler, Arizona's programs to combat homelessness, was particularly noteworthy.
On the surface, it talks about strong public management -- innovative new approaches to the program that are working.
But the speakers are also upfront about the fact that the new innovative approaches were made possible by the unprecedented flow of Federal COIVD relief and stimulus funds, which begs two questions for #municipalbonds investors (and state and local policymakers):
-- Can the programs be sustained once the funds expire?
-- How much more widely have "one-time" Federal funds been applied to recurring needs, and will local governments be able to cut spending (if necessary) fast enough to avoid fiscal stress?

Our Municipal Development Plan (MDP) is one of the most crucial documents guiding our county's growth and development. This legally required plan ensures everything fits into the bigger picture.
Curious to learn more? 📽️ Watch our short video to see how the MDP shapes our community's future!
Our schools are facing severe budget challenges that were fairly predictable in a post-ESSER (federal pandemic support) world.
The biggest item in those budgets? Labor.
And you can only cut that so far.
It's another reason why I built BenchK12.
Our technology creates a new kind of partnership between State Departments of Education and local districts and charters.
It helps remove a lot of burdens for local education agencies around hiring, retention, and data reporting.
It was built this way because our team deeply understands the challenges that states, districts, and charters face and we believe that they deserve modern technology designed for them that can help.
At a time when budgets are busting, our tech is designed to be *free* for local education agencies when their States adopt us.
Ready for a better technology experience that supports your educators and staff AND saves money?
Being the superintendent of Salem-Keizer Public Schools, a mid-sized urban district, is a daily joy and privilege. And sometimes it comes with the responsibility for kids across the country, not just my cities.
Public schools across our country are falling off a funding cliff in slow motion. The "slow motion" part freights the experience with equal parts hope and desperation. Hope, because there is still time for correction. Desperation, because our kids can't afford the fall.
My message includes content specific to Oregon, but I believe the general story is true across America.
