How easy or difficult it is to start your own Architecture firm in India? Because no one actually taught Architects and students in India on what to do with their degree many are left stranded with not much confidence. The best Example would be the starting own practice! It's so simple and yet we have 1000s of Architects clueless on what's needed to be done! Basics like gst, current account, msme registration, pan number - what's needed what's not needed etc! Bridging the Gap: JHA's Journey in Inspiring Future Architects In a recent and inspiring initiative, JHA took a step towards nurturing the next generation of Architects. Managing Director, John O'Neil, and our talented Part II Architectural Assistant, Lucy Deakin, had the privilege of engaging with eager young minds at a local secondary school. Our aim? To illuminate the path to a career in architecture and share the passion that lies at the heart of our profession. During our visit, we were greeted with overwhelming curiosity and enthusiasm from the students, who are considering the Architectural journey ahead. It was a joy to field their questions - a testament to their genuine interest in shaping the future through design. "We answered several interesting questions that the kids asked," remarked John O'Neil, reflecting on the eagerness of the students to learn from seasoned professionals. Our dialogue with these young, aspiring architects wasn't just about the technicalities of the profession but also about the personal growth, challenges, and triumphs one encounters on the path to becoming an architect. From discussing the importance of creativity and resilience to sharing practical advice on education and skill development, we aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of what it takes to succeed in this dynamic field. At JHA, we believe in the power of early engagement and education to inspire and empower the next generation. JLL's latest Construction Cost Guide predicts a 6% average increase in construction costs in FY 2024 in India, with Mumbai leading in expenses due to rising material prices. Labour costs are also expected to rise. Jipu Jose James, MD of Project Development Services at JLL India, emphasizes effective cost management for quality project delivery. Despite uncertainties, he's optimistic about India's construction growth. Labour emerges as a crucial economic driver, but there's a shortage of skilled workers. Hey fellow 'people of architecture', we are conducting India’s largest survey on the state of architectural practice in India. Imagine embarking on a new journey to a beautiful place and people come together in a nice small bus. Everyone takes the available window-seats. As time goes on, everyone inside gets so busy enjoying the view outside that they ignore everything inside. As time goes on, more and more people get in. The bus conductor (the COA) doesn’t care about how many can fit in and how many more are coming in daily. Worse: you don't even need a ticket to get in anymore! Eventually there is no more space inside and newbies have to crawl on the dirty floor, while the ones near the window seats despite being uncomfortable don’t care because they have to get down soon. I could continue with this analogy but to summarise, this in my opinion is the current state of architecture practice in India. Those who are in a position to make meaningful change ignore that something is still fundamentally wrong. While those who need this desperately are dealing with it silently accepting this as their fate that it is never going to change. With this survey, we want to voice both these opinions so that the issue can’t be swept under the carpet anymore. We hope to instil hope that there is someone somewhere who believes this can change. If we are honest and smart in our approach we have a shot at pulling this off. People can ignore opinions but not facts. We are pursuing this truth.
