🏆 The UK’s best new home – Six Columns by 31/44 Architects wins RIBA House of the Year 2024. Designed by Will Burges, Director of 31/44 Architects, as a family home for himself, his wife and two children, Six Columns cleverly occupies a tight plot in the leafy suburbs of Crystal Palace, South London. As the family occupy the building, they will continue to tinker with it, inside and out, allowing it to evolve to their changing needs over time. “Six Columns is a beautifully crafted family home that cleverly incorporates Brutalist references and creative flourishes while retaining a strong sense of suburban belonging. It shows what can be achieved when working with even the tightest of suburban sites, and its flexible, unfinished aesthetic offers a solution to futureproofed design: this is a home that can evolve with its occupants’ changing needs overtime. The generosity of space belies the limitations of this small garden plot. As we look for creative and practical solutions to the housing crisis, Six Columns offers a blueprint for bespoke urban infill development.” – Muyiwa Oki PRIBA, RIBA President ➡️ Watch the project film: https://ow.ly/seGA50Uj2Ru #HouseOfTheYear

We’re delighted to announce that our new temporary London office will be based at the Jerwood Centre, in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians. Our current base at 66 Portland Place will temporarily close to the public from 1 June 2025 onwards and the office move will take place late August 2025 to commence its refurbishment and restoration. Designed by Carden & Godfrey Architects to blend in with the surrounding Georgian and neo-Georgian buildings in Peto Place, the Jerwood Centre was opened in 2002 by the then HRH The Prince of Wales. The building is next door to the iconic Royal College of Physicians headquarters - where RIBA will share use of some facilities - a Grade I listed building designed by renowned architect, Royal Gold Medallist Sir Denys Lasdun. It’s a short walk from 66 Portland Place, served by both Great Portland Street and Regent's Park underground stations. ➡️ Find out more: https://ow.ly/HZtA50Vmb85

1.3 million households remain on social housing waiting lists 🏡 There is a clear moral imperative to provide more social housing. Our report, Foundations for the Future, suggests building a mix of social and market homes on land free that is free at the point of use, such as local authority owned land. When a proportion of the homes are sold on the open market, and all revenue is retained and reinvested, we can build more social homes at a lower net cost. ➡️ Learn more: https://ow.ly/eWbS50VlFje

"Partnering with the RIBA for MIPIM 2025 has been a game-changer—sparking fresh ideas, generating exciting leads, and opening doors to valuable international introductions we wouldn't have made otherwise." - Bill Webb, able partners We’re wrapping up at MIPIM 2025! Thank you to all 16 RIBA Chartered Practices who joined us in Cannes last week. Our delegation has been busy promoting the value of working with architects. From panel discussions and networking sessions, to collaborating to tackle urban development challenges, we've been brainstorming solutions for a more sustainable future. Highlights from the week include ⬇️ 🚴♂️ Our RIBA President Muyiwa Oki PRIBA cycled all the way from London to Cannes, raising money for three worthy causes. He also chaired panel discussions on the Value of Good Design and participated in the Challengers Conference, where he brought together young design professionals with fresh ideas and new perspectives on the industry. 🏗️ Jack Pringle PPRIBA, Chair of the RIBA Board, spoke at our RIBA Reception, emphasising how British-designed buildings continue to set the global standards for innovation in the built environment. 🇬🇧 Mayor of London Sadiq Khan joined us at the RIBA Stand, as he focussed on on accelerating the delivery of affordable homes. We showcased our recently released Foundations for the Future report, which sets out a new funding model for the delivery for social housing needed to help meet the government's pledge to build 1.5 million homes. Architects will play a crucial role in this, and MIPIM 2025 provided us with a great opportunity to showcase the value and expertise of our RIBA Chartered Practices in shaping a better built environment. 👏 A special thanks to our sponsors Barrisol Normalu SAS - Official for our RIBA Reception and T2 Design Solutions Ltd for our RIBA Stand. #MIPIM2025 #RIBAatMIPIM
