Saturday, May 18, is International Day for Women in Maritime. While this day highlights the incredible and talented women working at WSF, their contributions to the industry deserve daily recognition. The International Maritime Organization established this day to not only raise the profile of women in maritime but also to address the gender imbalance and promote the recruitment, retention and sustained employment of women in the sector. I've posted about this story before, but several years ago, my daughters and I watched the first SpaceX capsule docking at the International Space Station on TV. When the doors opened, the incoming astronauts posed for a picture with those already aboard the ISS. My youngest daughter, noticing the scene, asked in a disappointed voice, “Why is it only boys?” before leaving the room. That poignant moment underscored for me the importance of how our youth may perceive various career opportunities. That's why it's crucial for our employees to reflect the diversity of our general population as we work to stabilize our workforce for the long term. According to voluntary data, women made up just 23% of our employees in 2023. Our policies and culture should empower individuals from all backgrounds to thrive in their careers with us. I am committed to creating pathways and removing barriers to ensure women have every opportunity to succeed at WSF. Recently, we introduced several initiatives aimed at promoting internal equity and enhancing career prospects for all our crewmembers. While we’re proud of our progress, we recognize the journey ahead. Let's steadfastly champion diversity and equity, not only in images but in every facet of our maritime community. Together, we can navigate towards a more inclusive and prosperous future at sea.

Celebrating Women’s Excellence on International Women’s Day: As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we must take a moment to honor the extraordinary women who have left indelible marks on our world with their courage, intelligence, and tenacity. - Space Exploration: Valentina Tereshkova, who was the first woman to fly in space, and Mae Jemison who was the first African American woman astronaut, and both expanded our horizons beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. - Education & Advocacy: Malala Yousafzai was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and she continued to fight for girls’ education globally, and also proved that age is no barrier to making a significant impact. - Political Leadership: Angela Merkel led Germany for 16 years with a steady hand, and Kamala Harris made history as the first female Vice President of the United States. - Arts & Culture: Frida Kahlo’s art transcends time and spoke volumes about personal and political struggles, while Beyoncé used her platform to advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. These women, among countless others, have not only achieved personal success but have also paved the way for future generations. Their stories inspire us to continue the pursuit of equality and to celebrate the diversity and strength that women bring to our societies. Finally, we should commit to creating a world where every woman’s achievements are celebrated, and her potential is fully realized. So, which domain do you think is most significantly impacted from women’s achievements? #InternationalWomensDay Image source: shutterstock

Today we celebrate the strength and resilience of all women worldwide. To all the mothers who nurture and inspire us, the sisters who stand by our side, the daughters who carry the progress forward, and to all the countless women who face adversity and oppression, yet continue to rise above it. Today I chose to shed a light on remarkable women whose groundbreaking contributions to science have often been overlooked or stolen. Rosalind Franklin: Franklin's groundbreaking work on the structure of DNA laid the foundation for the discovery of its double helix shape. Despite her critical contributions, her work was overshadowed by others. Lise Meitner: A physicist who played a pivotal role in the discovery of nuclear fission, Meitner's brilliance was often overshadowed by her male colleagues. Her insights into nuclear physics were instrumental in shaping our understanding of the atom. Chien-Shiung Wu: Known as the "First Lady of Physics," Wu made significant contributions to the Manhattan Project and later disproved the law of conservation of parity. Despite facing discrimination as a woman and an immigrant, Wu's work revolutionized the field of physics. Jocelyn Bell Burnell: As an astrophysicist, Burnell discovered pulsars, but her male colleagues received the Nobel Prize for her discovery. Despite this injustice, Burnell's perseverance and dedication continue to inspire women in STEM fields worldwide. Today and every day, let’s amplify all women’s voices. Happy International Women's Day! #IWD2024

Today, a photo on my phone reminded me why I'm such a big advocate for DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusivity). 7 years ago today, my team won the first Airbus Defence and Space New Space Challenge. 🚀 During the competition kick-off event, it was pointed out that I was the only female and non-engineer taking part, but that didn't stop me. I knew my different background would give me diverse ways of thinking and carry me through to developing the correct solutions. 👩🏽💻 Not only did my team win, but I went on to win the UK Space Agency SatelLife competition on my own later that year. 🎊 𝐌𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞? As International Women's Day approaches (Friday 8th March) 👯♀️, I'm reminded how important it is to share stories like these, no matter how small it may feel. I always celebrate the day with activities to encourage other women & girls to breakdown stereotypes, and breakthrough into STEM (conferences, hackathons, keynotes, mentorship programs, etc). 🔭 👩🏽🔬 This year, I'm looking for like-minded individuals who want to work together and commemorate International Women's Day. Let's connect! #WomeninTech #WomeninSTEM #IWD2024

🚀 Celebrating International Space Week: Honouring Helen Sharman, A Pioneer in Space and Gender Equality 🌍 As we celebrate International Space Week, we remember not only humanity’s incredible strides into the cosmos but also the trailblazers who shattered barriers on Earth. Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut, made history in 1991 when she flew to the Mir space station. Yet, her accomplishment goes beyond national pride. Sharman is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and opportunity—qualities often denied to women in men-dominated fields. At a time when only a small fraction of astronauts were women, Helen opened the doors of space exploration to generations of girls and young women, showing that gender should never be a limitation in the pursuit of knowledge and adventure. At Genderscope, we are committed to continuing the legacy of women like Helen Sharman by working to dismantle barriers to gender equality in STEM and beyond, through initiatives such as: 👉 STEM Leadership Development: Providing mentorship and resources to empower women and girls interested in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and space exploration. 👉 Policy Advocacy for Gender Equality in STEM: Pushing for equitable policies that support women’s full participation in STEM fields, ensuring their contributions are valued and recognised. 👉 Diversity and Representation Initiatives: Amplifying the voices of women in space, science, and other fields where they have been historically underrepresented. Her mission—both as a scientist and a woman—is a reminder of the importance of representation. As more women rise in STEM, we must continue to break down systemic barriers to ensure every talented mind, regardless of gender, can reach for the stars. Let’s inspire future generations by amplifying these voices. Happy International Space Week! #SpaceWeek #HelenSharman #WomenInSTEM #GenderEquality #DiversityMatters #BreakingBarriers #STEMLeadership NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration JPL European Space Agency - ESA UKspace

Celebrate International Women's Day with "Hidden Figures" If you're a fan of powerful autobiographical films, look no further than "Hidden Figures." This remarkable movie stands out as a masterpiece in its portrayal of the incredible contributions of women. In 'Hidden Figures,' women take center stage, showcasing the pivotal roles they played in history. It's not just a story about inserting women into historical events—it's about recognizing them as the driving force behind these moments. Kelly Kirk of Black Hills State University beautifully encapsulates the film's significance: "It doesn’t just insert women into the history of a time or event. Instead, it shows how women are the story—they are there from the beginning, they are key actors, not just a sidebar to history." International Women's Day transcends all boundaries, celebrating women's achievements regardless of nationality, ethnicity, language, economic status, or political affiliation. Understanding the journey of the three female NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration mathematicians depicted in "Hidden Figures" is a profound way to honor this day. Let's continue celebrating the resilience and accomplishments of women everywhere. Feel free to share your favorite women's empowerment films in the comments below. #LongHaffizDiary #TheWiderFuture #HiddenFigures #internationalwomensday2024 #RealInspirations
