Marty Cagan's new book, TRANSFORMED, is out – finally 😊 Optimally speaking you will have read the two earlier books, INSIPRED and EMPOWERED. But – the good news is that TRANSFORMED can be read stand-alone. As with INSPIRED and EMPOWERED, it is impossible in a short post to give fair credit to TRANSFORMED. I’ll try to share a couple of highlights. It elegantly supplies answers to the key question left in the two previous books … great stuff, but how do we become (transform) among the best, leaving the rest, embracing the product operating model? You’ll in the book find a treasure chest of very practical and concrete guides, recommendations and first principles on how to approach the transformation, nicely with red threads back to INSPIRED and EMPOWERED. What is really refreshing are the case stories from the not Netflix, Amazon, Tesla, Apple … I’ve decided to pick a few quotes from chapter 18, Product Delivery, not because they necessary are the most central ones, but because they happen to resonate with some of the challenges, I’m currently facing: “If you are serious about taking care of your customers, you will need to invest in your ability to deliver very frequent, very small releases” “Frequent, smaller releases provide both more throughput (higher velocity) and higher quality at strong product companies” “Unfortunately, many companies have not yet achieved the ability to do these small, frequent releases. Instead, they make hundreds or even thousands of changes, and then, once a month, once a quarter, or even once a year, they will work to integrate all these changes together. They then try to test that all these new capabilities work as expected, and then they begin the grind of trying to identify and remove newly introduced problems” “In fact, many products built this way never achieve a state of solid quality, and the customer is forced to deal with a constant stream of defects and issues…” If you’ve not yet gotten the point: go get the book!

Thank you to my friends and connections for recommending books to me this year. I read over 35 books this year -- some good, some not so good, and some great, but a handful were truly impactful. One of those impactful books was Tripp Mickle's "After Steve: How Apple Became a Trillion Dollar Company and Lost its Soul." Going into the book, I knew less about Apple than many of you. It was eye-opening to learn about the dynamic between Steve Jobs, Jony Ive, and Tim Cook. The book delved deeply into how Ive, Jobs' "spiritual partner," played a crucial role in designing iconic Apple products. However, following Jobs' death, Ive struggled with grief and found himself disenchanted with a company prioritizing profits over innovation. Cook, in contrast, focused on maximizing margins and building a strong business in China. The "hook" of the book is that while Cook led Apple to tremendous revenue growth, the company lost its innovative spirit. Ive's departure in 2019 symbolized a shift towards operational excellence at the expense of creativity - a trade-off between financial success and the loss of Apple's innovative identity. The book challenged me to ask myself: "what identity and core values are at risk of being lost for the benefit of financial success?" What books are you reading?
