DNV has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co (DSOC) for its 12,000 m³ and 20,000 m³ CO2 carrier vessel concepts. The certificate, awarded during the 50th anniversary of ONS Norway, acknowledges the overall feasibility of the ship designs, which were developed in collaboration between DSOC and various industry partners. Mathias Sørhaug, Business Development Director CO2 Shipping at DNV Maritime, said: “DNV is very proud to collaborate with such a strong consortium of technology providers. This new and exciting ship segment features highly relevant vessel designs for the emerging trade patterns in Northern Europe. Knutsen NYK Carbon Carrier (KNCC) and COSCO Shipping Lines have partnered to carry out a joint study to ensure market readiness and detail design development for liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carriers as part of efforts to support the realization of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) initiatives. The research will include the use of the Norwegian joint venture’s proprietary LCO2-Elevated Pressure (LCO2-EP) technology on an LCO2 carrier, which received an Approval in Principle from DNV in 2022, followed by a General Approval for Ship Application for its LCO2-EP cargo tanks in 2023. The vessel concept for this study will focus on a direct injection offshore ship, which transports CO2 to permanent storage sites offshore, saving time and cost in the development of a CCUS value chain compared to establishing dedicated terminals and export infrastructure. Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) has released a new report outlining guidelines and key safety conditions for developing liquified hydrogen bunkering systems. The report found, among other things, that the bunkering process for hydrogen will be more complex than for LNG, meaning experience gained from LNG bunkering cannot be re-used directly. Training and certification of crew is therefore more important than for other bunkering processes and developing vessel-specific procedures is necessary. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO Maritime, DNV, commented: “Hydrogen is going to continue to play an important role in the energy transition, both as a marine fuel and as a cargo, which is why it is critical to develop standards to support its safe bunkering.
