The Workplace Health Report paints a stark picture: 13.7 million working days are lost each year in the UK due to work-related stress, anxiety and depression, costing a staggering £28.3 billion annually. Moreover, 76% of employees report moderate-to-high or high levels of stress. Amidst these alarming figures, Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) emerge as significant contributors. https://lnkd.in/efKhih25 #MSK #employeehealth #physio

According to Statista Consumer Insights, 2.8 million people in the UK were not working due to long-term sickness in November 2023. This is a considerable increase since 2019, when 1.97 million were economically inactive for this reason. Research by Vitality has shown that #presenteeism – the term for working while ill with an impaired performance – has also increased and is strongly related to non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease. Much of this ill-health is attributable to poor lifestyle behaviours, including inactivity and poor diets. As health risks are interrelated and individuals who are risk of physical inactivity and poor diets are more likely to be at risk for chronic conditions as well, a large proportion of total work impairment is concentrated within a small segment of the population. With the UK the only G7 economy yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, could workplace wellness help solve this problem? Kath Hudson asked the experts... ⭐ Workplace adjustments for Fibromyalgia (A quick guide for managers and sufferers) The only rule you need to know: No-one gets Fibro until they have Fibro. Be patient with your staff and let them express in a safe space what their symptoms are and how those translate to their needs. If you don't know what you need to help you work most effectively, pause the conversation and think about your 'wish list' for the perfect workspace. If it's a chair with a good lumbar support, or like me, an ergonomic keyboard to take the strain off your wrists - you can ask for the things you need. Remember, asking is free of charge. Do not hide away from it. Your body and your health are the most important thing, your managers want and need you to be safe, well and happy to be able to give your best every day. I know it's embarrassing to admit that your body hates you, but in a good working environment, your managers truly do want the best for you. Flexibility (this is where I am so lucky!) If you can agree a hybrid pattern, then do, working from home decreases the anxiety of what the commute is going to do to our bodies on any particular day. And having the safety to call in and arrange to work at home when we wake up and find we can't walk on that day is so valuable. Speak to occupational health, both as a manager and team member, the OH teams are amazing and can provide a lot of guidance, external reading and just good old fashioned support. Keep the conversation open. My manager and I have a monthly health related catch up where I can express how I feel, and we come up with coping strategies, working pattern plans and I cannot tell you what a difference that makes. Even if I've nothing to say, just having that time for someone to check in on me and make sure I'm well makes me feel so valued and cared for.
