Not all of us love the commute. While you can find positives in the camaraderie of a packed tube, or delight in a forgotten chocolate bar in your rucksack, let’s be honest, it’s a pain. But once I get to The Crown Estate office, just a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Circus, the memories of GWR drift away. Why? For me, it’s all about choice. And in the West End where I work, choice is everywhere you look. The choice of cafés, bars, restaurants, shops. The choice of places to swoop in and out, or places to stop, stay, and linger. The choice to check out that new restaurant you’ve heard such good things about, or grab something quick and easy, that won’t break the bank. As people, it’s important for us to have choice. And we’re truly spoiled for it here. That’s why I’ll happily put up with the travel time. And the fare. And the packed tubes. Because when I get to the West End, I’ve all the possibility I could ask for, right on my doorstep. When you think about industrial areas do you think of sports and entertainment venues, play centres, gyms, dance and yoga studios, breweries, education and health providers? Probably not. Yet these are the type of uses popping up throughout our industrial precincts. There is a new form of industrial precinct emerging in which once exclusively industrial uses now intermingle with hospitality, leisure and service destinations. The Melton Employment and Industrial Strategy is guided by a long term plan to shape and direct traditional and non-traditional industrial precincts. The strategy includes an industrial land use framework in which population focused uses are directed to industrial locations near residents while large format manufacturers and logistics enterprises that require guaranteed 24 operations are directed toward more autonomous areas.
