In celebration of Black History Month, we welcomed Masai Ujiri to our Toronto HQ yesterday for a fireside chat with our CEO, Dani Reiss, C.M. OOnt.. Masai is Vice-Chairman & President of the Toronto Raptors, Co-Founder of Giants of Africa and a longtime friend of Canada Goose.   Masai and Dani touched on a number of topics from friendship to leadership to representation of marginalized identities. Here are three takeaways from their chat:   1. Leveraging diversity for greater inclusion is more than representation. It is actively embracing and valuing the different perspectives and experiences that each person brings, creating an environment where everyone can thrive. 2. The importance of giving back to your community. Through initiatives like youth basketball camps, educational programs and community outreach, Masai’s Giants of Africa empowers young people with equitable opportunities, instilling values such as teamwork, resilience and leadership. 3. The significance of Black representation in leadership cannot be overstated. As the first African General Manager in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Masai acknowledged the responsibility to pave the way for broader representation across all industries, emphasizing the importance of always treating everyone with the respect and compassion they deserve.   A special thank you to the local Black led businesses who partnered with us for the event: Cultiv8, Anthony Gebrehiwot, Laz Catering and Knead it Baked. As part of Black History Month, we’re highlighting Charissa Newkirk, a protocol officer at NIWC Pacific. When asked what the observance month means to her, she spoke about representation. “In my line of work, I am usually the initial person a visitor meets, networks, and interacts with. “How I initiate and validate communication with others is professional, relatable, reliable, accurate, and honest. You ask what this means to me: it is important because of the ways and practices I am always willing to help. ‘Representation is vital otherwise the butterfly surrounded by a group of moths unable to see itself will keep trying to become the moth.’ – Rupi Kaur “It truly means a lot and makes a difference because as a leader no matter the culture, no matter the background, you represent something, and your sphere of influence can have a positive or negative affect. As we are the few but the mighty, I strive to be positive, influential, and inspiring, simply because representation matters.” We observe Black History Month each year in February to honor, celebrate, and educate on the contributions Black Americans have made to our country’s history and culture. Black History Month began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora.  It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland and the United Kingdom, it is observed in October. First conceptualized in the U.S. by Carter G. Woodson in 1925, Black History Month provides a good opportunity to both recognize the achievements, as well as acknowledge the painful history of how individuals from the African diaspora have been, and continue to be, displaced and systemically discriminated in painful ways across countries across the globe. Doing the work of DE&I requires a fundamental dedication to educating oneself.  Understanding the history of systemic racism within America, as well as across the globe, is absolutely essential to not just our DE&I work, but our responsibility as global citizens.  It is important to expose yourself to different writings and vantage points to clearly grasp that the issues are not straightforward nor similar across contexts, regions, and countries.  The value for us, individually and as those committed to doing DE&I work, is to gather empathy first, then move beyond empathy to engagement - and inspire this movement in others! #bhm #blackhistorymonth #dei #diversityandinclusion #diversityequityinclusion
