Hot take incoming… If you don’t have a specialized skill that is listed as required for a job…. Don’t apply. Let me be clear, I admire folks who are trying to shift careers, expand, and grow. But sometimes required experience or skills are actually… required. Assuming you can “wing it” - whatever it is - let’s say, media relations - minimizes the actual skill, training, schooling, experience, and relationships that one who DOES have that skill brings to the table. If a job posting does not indicate that on the job training is part of the role, and you don’t have the skill or experience required, simply don’t apply. Your application wastes time (yours and ours) and frankly, makes you look bad to the hiring manager and company leaders, especially when the misalignment in skill + need is not addressed or explained in the application process, cover letter, or any other way. #hiring #publicrelations #hottake

I have been seeing a lot of resumes lately where the candidate is simply copying and pasting language from a job description and making very few changes. Organizations are looking to hire a person for a job, not a job description! You have a ton of great accomplishments which no job description can demonstrate. Only you can. Quantify it. Evangelize it. Blow your horn. You’re awesome and you’ll be your strongest advocate for you - this piece of paper is like a that golden ticket. Make it about you and all you have done. Ever apply to a company and not hear anything back? This comes down a few things: - right time - right decision maker - is your resume up to par? Right Time: - Lots of guys tell me they sent in their resume to a contractor but never heard anything back. Right Decision Maker - Huge one here; gotta know the decision maker or else things take longer. Is your resume up to par? - This are a pain to make, especially after a 12 hour shift in the sun. How many of these blunders are you guilty of? 💥 Requiring "years of experience" for an entry-level role and/or a role you're not willing to pay "years of experience" for. 💥Unless the job is fundamentally impossible to do/understand without a degree, do you really need to be asking for one? 💥SALARY = APPLICATIONS 💥Benfits / Perks transparency - it's one of your greatest selling tools!! Additional food for thought... 💭 Are your benefits truly benefits? And how do you benchmark them? 💡You should be writing a new job description each time you're hiring.
